"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Thanks Pam! My mixed EEs hatch out just the same as what you described for the silverudd blue so I'm out of luck there. The EEs should be pretty big, so I can wait to see what happens there.

Only two bieles made it to lockdown. The one that hatched pipped a vein and i was sure it wasn't going to survive that. I don't know what my temps were like for the week I was gone, so it could've been temp related. Looks like the quitters all did do around the same time, so likely a spike I'd think.

I just have a feeling they're all roos. That's the sort of hatch it has been. I've heard that the roos tolerate heat spikes better than pullet eggs. But who truly knows.

I'll be interested to see how many are males out of your whole hatch. I hear many things about males this way and poulets another way. Some turn out to be old wives tales that are wrong some turn out to be true. Check the feathers at three days. Hope it's a wife's tale that is wrong. Pam

I've never tried the wings because I thought that was for mixes of fast-feathering and slow-feathering breeds. I'll make notes this time, though. I also have a running theory that the first chick to hatch is always a roo. I need to start marking them better at hatch so I can keep track.

Very interesting I will start doing the same with the ones I don't sell at hatch. Good idea thanks. The wing sexing doesn't work with every breed but Silverrudd blues are one it works with. Pam

Here's my mixed cochin baby! I think the roo was the EE, because of the gray legs. RIR is the other choice.

Looks like feathered feet. That should tell you what breed. Pam

Feathered feet are from the cochin mama.

Another silverudd blue hatched overnight! So now I have something to compare it to find the other one.

Pam, here's a silverudd baby on the left (hatched overnight) and a mixed EE on the right. See my dilemma? The EE baby has a pea comb, so I know it's mixed. There is a mostly black baby in there, single comb and no crest, so maybe that's the other silverudd?

I thought you hatched a doz. I'll see what chick picks I can find. Pam

I wish! I had a dozen eggs but only two hatched. I think my hatch rate is ~40%? It's less than 50%. Being gone that week really messed me up.

So sorry to here that. Sure you don't want me to replace the two clears I offered before? For your next hatch. Only two Silverrudds? They are easy to hatch too. Something must have happened while you were gone. Pam

That's what I think too. The 17th chick just hatched, and 18 eggs left. Just under 50%. I think I got at least two of everything but the biele. He's so teeny tiny! :love
