"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Well we got a 10 minute rain... just enough to make the hot day HOTTER!!!!!!... I did plant some more grass seed today being that they are forcasting 4 days of rain.. of course I believe my weather rock before I believe a TV weather personality. (And I'm in the Television Business..lol). But a cool off is also in the ole' forcast... reference back to the weather rock....

Anyhow.. I have 8 little bitty serama eggs in the bator at a new friends home... They just completed day 2, gonna candle them on day 4 to check for movement.

Melting in West Monroe....

Don't you hate those little rains-like it isn't hot enough already. And when's this "cool off" you speak of? Definitely lookin forward to that. First day of Fall's tomorrow, I think, and it's supposed to be up in the 90s here. Gotta love La! lol

And, Joe, if you're ever in the market for more Seramas, let me know. I've got several nice ones from Bluegrass seramas, a member here. I'm thinking of getting rid of them-just downsizing a little-too many breeds. Good luck with your eggs. Let us know how the candling goes.

And, who saw the game last night? Go Saints! It was a tough one, but they did it. Don't know what we'll do without Reggie Bush though. I hear he has a fracture, and may be out for the next 6 weeks. Not good at all...

Yeah, it IS hot.....myself, I'm sick and tired of it. I'm an outdoors kinda girl, but it's hard to make myself get out the doorway, with all this heat.

We NEVER get any of the rain. Got friends in Monroe/West Monroe, they call when it rains there, wanting to know how much rain we got....always the same, NONE....I'm like, 'What....rain? Where...?' And I'm only 45 minutes away.....Oh well....can't stay mad about it, it's gotta get better sooner or later.

Hey Joe, what kinda chickens you got over there? I've been looking for someone local to maybe do a little swapping with now and then.

Try less than a mile down the road. They'll get a pouring down rain and we get nothing. It's crazy.

I'm with everyone with this heat. I seriously can't wait for some cooler weather. Hope we don't have much longer to wait.

Hi everybody! ready for some cooler fall weather here for sure. Going to plant the fall garden tomorrow & hope for the best -- we could use a little rain here, it's very dry & dusty.

Some predator got into my pen & killed 4 of my best hens last week. We spent Sunday afternoon doing more predator-proofing. This morning as I turned out of the driveway to go to work, there was a young dead coyote in the middle of the road -- I have a feeling that might have been the culprit & I'm not sorry a bit somebody ran over him last night!

My peachicks are growing like weeds & so much fun to have around!

Hey Terri. I guess I'm not the only one then with predator problems. I've lost so many again this Summer to coyotes. I finally went and bought a 22 so that I can take care of them myself. I shot and killed one about a month ago. We bush-hogged not long after and saw 4 more. Since then, I haven't seen any more, but I'm sure they're just waiting around to strike again. I'll be ready this time, though. My chicken yard is enclosed, but there are those who like to go beyond hunting for bugs, therefore they become coyote bait.

We haven't lost any this year but hubby and I were going to work a few weeks ago and had just pulled out our drive way when one ran across the road. Rarely do we ever seen them during the day and this was about 4 in the afternoon.

Sorry about the losses ya'll had this year!!

Well my collection is small right now... I have 2 BR, 2 SS, 3 EE (one a roo), and 1 BO... Now with that said... I have 8 Serama eggs in the bator. My wife wanted a couple of Bantams...lol.. don't get much smaller than that.. So Far, my friendliest birds I have have been the BRs, and the BO (Ms. Buffington) .. I had two BOs, but my son's golden retriever mistook one for a squeaky toy. Sign..

I want to plant my fall garden, but If I was to turn the soil, I would loose most of it by blowing off in the wind... Just still watering the sad looking just planted grass.

BTW... I have lived in LA all my life. Infact I joined the Army to see the world, and they sent me to Ft. Polk. I HATE HOT WEATHER... 80 days, 50 nights... Put a nail in it and paint it red, that is my temps to shoot for. Oh.. Don't like Ice... keep that, little snow every once in a while.

Still melting in West Monroe..

It's an OWL.

We heavily reinforced the coop, new heavy-duty doors, added wire all around the outer perimeter, set traps, the only thing left to do is put flight netting over the top of the run, which we'll do this weekend--

anyway, last night I could not get my splash roo & 1 young black hen to go inside for anything - the splash roo is afraid of my main roo, & about 10:00 I got tired of chasing them & said "go ahead, stay outside & get eaten" & we went to bed.

this morning, a few feathers & no splash roo-no body, no 'parts' - just feathers. The little black hen was still running around & I realized that not one of my black hens has been taken -- it's all been the lighter colored hens -- and we have tons of owls around. Nothing had tripped any of the traps & no signs of anything trying to get over or under the 6-0 fence that makes up the run, and no signs of interference around the coop either.

I talked to a few of the hunters I work with & they all said "Owl".

My peachicks are in my "grow-out" pen which is heavily reinforced & also has flight netting over every inch of it, and is closer to the house - they've been fine.

Gee, I was looking to cut back on my flock some, but not like this!
Anyway, full moon tomorrow night, so a good night to stay up & see if we can spot anything.

Looking forward to cooler temps supposed to be coming next week!
Lucky you Joe, with Seramas! sending positive hatching vibes your way. I was thinking about Seramas but got hooked into peacocks instead.

We're planting our fall garden this evening-luckily it's within reach of the water hose at the barn.

I'm glad you found out what it was. Sorry you had to lose another one.

One of the best things we did this year was tap into our water line and put a water spigot on to each of my raised beds. Makes it SO much easier to water with a soaker hose. It was easy and cheap to do.

When your peachicks are older will you keep them in a pen or are you going to let them roam?? I've wanted them for years but don't want them to eat all my flowers!!
