Do you have ANY idea how hard it is to find king cake in California??? Thank goodness we have World Market out here where you can at least buy a mix for making king cake (and it's actually pretty good). There are a few places here where you can get Cafe DuMonde coffee and beignet mix, too. (And you can't say the word "beignet" out here without someone saying, "What's THAT?")
The only thing harder than finding king cake out here is finding anybody who actually knows what it is!!! I called all these fancy-schmancy big California Capital City bakeries and specialty shops all over Sacramento, and not one person... NOT ONE ... knew what King Cake was. Seriously? I mean, even I knew about King Cake before I met Farmer Lew! I miss Mardi Gras season SO bad. We still have a big bag of beads from the Spanish Town parade in Baton Rouge from 2005!! We are having some friends over next weekend for a pot of gumbo and some king cake, and yesterday a guy came into my husband's work with some boudin! That's the first time I've EVER seen boudin in California.
Probably the biggest thing, in all seriousness, keeping us from moving back there is the 2-1/2 inch long flying cockroaches. Yah, I can do without those for the remainder of my days & I'd be okay with that.
