chickenguru...thank you for responding..my other question is if not a Isa brown what DO you get? Breeding Isa Roo to Isa Hen = ? will it be as good a layer as the Isa Hen is? that is my question for that is why I want this breed for the eggs, I have Buff Orps - RIRs - astrolorpes for meat birds....am I thinking correctly ? I have only 1 game hen...she is sitting on 12 eggs, all not hers she took over the nest /I want more game hens as they are hardy - free range birds and will become broody...will decide which of the meat birds I will continue with (only want 2 meat breeds) can you suggest which YOU would keep? Thank you for all the help......G

Gramby - Thank you - They all have been free rangeing and DO come back at night, new question...Have a little fizzle with 8 chicks ( hatched April 5 ) would like to put her back into flock (they could see her in her little coop when they are out) and use her cage for the Roo... will they accept her and her 8 chicks? should I wait? am just waiting for all the information as to what to do before I make any changes....

Boy do I appreciate this thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! More changes will come as I have 2 more sets of chicks (1 mo olds and 2 week olds) but not for quite a while, will hold the biggies I call them until I can recognize who is HEN & who is ROO....will seperate them then.....does that sound like a plan? The math -- the math --the math Ha. Love it

Oh my goodness - thank you....I didn't even think of that..... the eight would go very well with the 26 hatched April 17 --- 8 hatched April 5..... Precious (fizzle) looks like she wants out, they can do well without her now.....am blessed to
have 2 hens that will go broody to insure future natural increase in flock.....am waiting for one of my 4 buff orps to decide it is her turn -- then I will be happy... Am praying for your son and will continue to do so......G

Brooder has a wire floor, no problems with chicks....Do I have to put something on the POOP that falls under or do I have to rake it out....the brooder is fenced in so no predators can get at the chicks (wire fence so air will flow through) I spray the brooder often (poop ends up on boards holding wire and don't want flies etc... chicks don't like it but I do it anyway.....it is warm enough and I have a heat lamp if toward evening.....

You don't need to do anything about the brooder if it's in an area where the poop can just fall to the ground. I have mixed feelings about the wire floor. I have a wire floor on mine as well and it worked great for a couple years until one night an oppossum harrassed the heck out of my chicks and tried to pull them through the wire. I had several chicks with amputated toe tips. Now, I worry about another attack on my brooder. The next brooder I build will have a poop drawer to protect the chicks from an attack from under their wire floor.

Kingsfarm....If you breed the male from ISA Browns to the female ISA Browns you will
just have a mixed breed chicken since they do not breed true. They should be decent
layers but I have never bred any of the sex links to a sexlink male so I wouldn't know
what they would look like or how they would be as layers.
You can breed to get your own sex links at home if you have the right mix. Like a RIR or a NHR rooster bred to
a RHode Island White or Deleware hen.

Gramby - I did it...moved chicks to brooder, fizzle to coop and huge RIR roo to a bachalor pad... just went out to check on everyone and all were asleep....thanks again...waiting to know who is Roo and who is hen then I will make another switch....roos to be prepared for camp in a seperate cage from pullets. the brooder is wired all around the undersides so nothing can go UNDER the brooder floor, I almost cut the wire away this evening and thought better of it, am glad since I sure don't want to chance lost toes.

TGIF everybody! this has been one long week & I am so glad it's almost over.

Will be processing our first freezer camp roo this weekend; nervous but determined to get this done. I just got a brand new Foodsaver system 2040 off of Ebay after stalking auctions for months. $54 new in box & on Amazon they run around $179! From now on I intend to process all of my extra roos, plus may do meat birds this fall.

Worried about my hatch, I have never had such problems w/humidity in my bator. I generally run it around 40s, but this morning woke up to find it at 28!!! for the 2nd time!!!! and when I added water the other day, it suddenly spiked to 65!!! so I was running around w/paper towels soaking up excess. I had forgotten what a pain hand turning eggs is. I'm going to try & candle this weekend - these are all my bluest Ameracauanas eggs & hard as the dickens to see anything. I just do not have high hopes for a good hatch out of this one, but we'll see what happens. Have any of you had humidity spikes & did OK? the temps have remained very stable....

Also have a good friend looking for a well bred Golden Retriever puppy if anybody knows any good breeders - by good I mean they test for hip dysplasia & so on. They lost their beloved old Golden & their daughter is beside herself w/grief. This dog will not be a hunting dog, just a cherished family pet. Please PM me if you know of any.

Sorry about the loss of your friend's goldens. That's heartbreaking! We lost a couple males on our return from Hurricane Rita. That was a real jolt for us because one of the males we lost was the first golden we owned and my husband was very attached to that dog. My husband had taught the dog to tell the difference between his various toys. My husband would throw out eight different toys in the yard and have the dog go and retreive a specific toy from the yard. We were always impressed with the dogs ability to do this. Also, one of my cats was very attached to the dog and would curl up and sleep under his neck. The dog was also very gentle with my grandchildren. At the time, I had four grandchildren all under the age of four and the dog was taught to walk with and around the children so that he didn't knock them down. The grandchildren loved the dog and spent lots of time throwing toys for the dog to retreive. He was a good babysitter! Sometimes our pets just don't live long enough
