"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Don't give up hope on them being golden cuckoos. The feathered legs go
along with the French standard for the golden cuckoos.
I don't think that the golden cuckoo is a pefected color and some of the color difference
could be a throwback to cuckoo marans. I have seen some color difference myself on
what I knew was pure golden cuckoos.

Thanks! It just wasn't something I was expecting!!

Okay... Here's a pic to give you an idea of what they should look like!!

Here's the one that's all was solid brown! With the black legs!

And I have 5 Black ones like this!! All with the black wash down the legs!

So now I guess only time will tell what they'll turn out to look like!! I posted on the Marans thread and they said it was common to have them come out black but the leg color was a different story. Here is a comment that was made also! "Golden Cuckoo are IMHO the least refined variety of Marans at this point, with the fewest breeders who actually know what they have (genetically) and are able to produce birds that breed true."

I see they replaced my version of your version also.

My Black Coppers had that "black wash" down their legs when they were chicks.

Hope we get some rain today, looks promising. We're researching building a storm cellar after all the horror of the tornadoes. Dig a 8x8x6 pit & lined with cinder blocks filled in with sackrete; just something we can duck into quickly if needed. We have our old pool pump we can use to siphon it out if it starts holding water. Researching to see if anybody has actually done this & did it work.

OK off to worm the young ones & turn eggs. Have a good rest of the weekend ya'll!

Did the black wash go away??

OK just looked at my 2 month old Black Coppers-- where the "black wash" was is now where feathering is, & the rest of their legs is a sort of steel grey color.

For what it's worth I checked my 2 Cuckoo Marans hens & both of them have white legs -- one is breeder & one is hatchery, neither one has feathered legs. I honestly don't remember if they had black wash or not - that was 3 years ago..

OK who wants 2 bad Cocker Spaniels? these 2 little fools will not quit barking -- we have a big Mama turtle laying her eggs in the field just outside the patio door. They just had baths this morning so are clean & well groomed!

If you haven't voted for the Virginia Wildlife center & the Norfolk Conservation center yet please go to

http://www.facebook.com/ChaseCommunityGiving & vote for these 2 worthy organizations.

VWC took in the Norfolk eaglets this past week when their Mother eagle was killed by a jet. Both organizations now stand in the top 10 in this voting competition -- top 10 winners get $25,000 for their charity. You have 10 votes to use on the organizations you like -- you can only vote one time for each one. Make it count!

Thanks for looking Terri!! As for the dogs, why is it as soon as they get a bath they have to either go roll in something nasty or it rains and the first thing they do is head for the mud???
