My four sebbie eggs arrived today. They arrived unbroken!

Didn't check the airsacs yet but hopefully they're intact. If I hatch any they will be solid white. This will be my first trial run with goose eggs in my new incubator.

Wonderful news !!

Hello again, yes it is VERY HOT here also...integrating 10 weeks flock with hens, problem: feeding...called feed store and they said to put ALL on starter/grower feed....are my laying hens getting proper nutrition? have oyster shell available to them...they free-range and the younger ones are coming out the coop area now (only about 10 feet until one of the big ones scares them) getting braver every day....all are eating same feed but have two feeders (that works fine) no longer a seperation between them in covered coop so they do mingle......concern is proper food...concerned also: I want to feed them all BOSS - for natural worming - can the little ones eat BOSS - or - SCRATCH - or RICE grains????? once I get these precious "organized mass confusion sweeties" safely integrated will start on my 2nd group...26 pullets (would love to have them eventually ALL free-range...(26 are 7 weeks old ) I appreciate you. Thanks for all the wonderful advice I am getting here. don't feel so NEW anymore and am learning something every day - big challenge will come when I will "do the deed" but that is one of the reasons I raise and love these chickens----as you do I know.....

I can certainly understand your concern. For me, in this crazy hatching season, when integrating the younger flock with my hens and other animals, I feed the entire flock Purina Flock Raiser (20% protein). The young and older chickens can eat it. I know a lot of people on BYC who use Purina Flock Raiser and are very satisfied. Once they reach the laying age, then you can switch them to lay pellets if that is what you would like to do. Some people continue to feed Flock Raiser as a daily feed.

Feed Form: Pellets or Crumbles
How and When to Feed:
1.Feed Purina Mills

2.For free-range and confined turkeys, first feed Purina Mills

3.At 18-20 weeks of age, feed Purina Mills

Recipe free-choice to chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese.
4.Always provide shelter and a constant supply of fresh, clean water.
5.Consumption will vary depending upon season of the year, nutritional needs of the animals and availability of other foods.
Important:
A feeding program is only as effective as the management practices. Actual results can vary depending upon feed intake, environmental conditions and the quality of management practices.

Caution:
Store in a dry, well-ventilated area free from rodents and insects. Never use moldy or insect-infested feed.

As far as the BOSS, Rice Grains and Scratch, I don't feed the younger ones BOSS until they are about 4 months old but I do throw in a little rice grains every now and then. However, I am sure as long as you have Oyster shell, the BOSS will be ok to feed the younger ones. The older hens get BOSS and Rice Grains every day. I mix it with the daily feed. The BOSS and Rice Grain along with Lay pellets is in the large hanging feeder in the raised coop and a few other coops that only house the older hens. The young ones don't ever get into the raised coop to eat the lay pellet mixture. I don't think they even notice the high coop.

I feel that the BOSS also helps with egg production. BOSS is so expensive nowadays. I went to TSC yesterday and noticed that a 40lb bag of BOSS is $27.00.

I was lucky enough to find 1 - 40lb bag of BOSS for $20.00 (it was reduced for some reason) and with my in-house coupon, it was only $19.00. The 20 lb bags of BOSS have increased from $9.99 to $14.99. OUTRAGEOUS!

HOT is the operative word again today all right! I put both starter & laying pellets out when I integrate - actually I switch my young ones to the same thing I use for the peas - game bird conditioner - it's higher protein - but I also have a feeder inside the coop with laying pellets for the laying hens - they will munch on it when they come inside to lay - they can eat BOSS & anything else - anything the big chickens can eat, at that age, at least it never hurt mine. I am fixing to cut a watermelon to chill for this weekend & will cut the rind into pieces & freeze it- they all love that during this hot weather.

Have a good Sat everybody! off to put up more cucumbers, empty the dehydrator & start some eggplants in it, & have plum jelly & jam to put up also. Busy busy busy summer day!!
