"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Good morning everyone. All coops are open and everyone is beginning the day. I guess today is the today to finally cut the grass.

I have to make a hay run to get some hay for the sheep and goat.

I didn't realize how badly I needed a few days off. My body was so tired from working with the animals every day. I guess people who don't have chickens and other animals like us don't have much to do in their "off" time. Just think about how much time we all would have if we didn't have our animals. Nawwwwwww, don't even want to think about that. I'm good.

Hope that everyone has a good day and hope that your animals remain safe and healthy.

I figured out what my predator was -- it was an OWL. Yesterday evening, I was walking around the back of my runs, watching the peacocks displaying, & suddenly I smelled something dead. Oh, it was just awful! I looked & looked & finally I looked UP and there was the body of my hen right in the middle of the wire over the top of the peacock's pen!

I got the long tree trimmer pole & used it to hook the dead hen & drag her over the fence -- the stench was beyond awful, I was gagging & my eyes were streaming tears but I wanted to check her over.

Her head was missing & there were deep gouge marks from talons. I figure the owl caught her just at the door to the coop and dragged her back & killed her, but when it started to fly off her body was too heavy & so it dropped her over the peacock pen.
We have a LOT of owls around, I hear them every night, so I'm sure that was what it was.

I've baited my traps with tuna, sardines, & chicken & caught nothing, but I'll keep doing so for a while yet.

Julia I hear ya about the time off. I confess that I'm looking forward to being unemployed for a few weeks anyway, it will be pure joy to not be having to hurry all the time.

Have a good one everybody!

My uncle just called and asked me if I wanted a FREE horse. I told him there is no such thing as a free horse

I am griping over the cost of food for my chickens as it is! Seems like this drought has a lot of people looking to unload the animals just to keep from having to buy feed. It's pretty sad

But I just wanted everyone to know that I exercised a little self control and politely declined! I'm pretty proud of myself!

Alas,.. We are soo sorry about you losses and the predator problems you are having,.. DH suggested a camera to maybe find out what it is,..

Terri Ann,. I am so sorry about your poor hen,..what does one do about lots of owls? We have only one that was hanging around in the pre dawn hours that we chased off with firecrackers,.. but lots of them?...

Gracie9205,.. DD says turning down a free horse is insanity,..of course she is a 16 yr old, horse loven, non mortgage paying girl

,..

DH says "great self control,.. he once told a salesman that called " I can't afford any more free stuff"!

Heck yeah worth a shot! I've been surprised at some of the old office furniture I've sold on Craigslist this past week. Think I'll list my stuffed deer head. It's real pretty (for a deer head) but I have no room at home for it.

on turning down the "free" horse. I've turned down two of them this year. So glad we took the fences down 'cuz otherwise I would be soooo tempted.

Bayoupoules as far as the owls I'm not going to do anything about them. I like owls & they eat a lot of good things like rats, mice etc. it was my fault for forgetting to close the door tight. I wont' forget again!

edit to add: by "lots" I mean at least 3-4 of them in our area. Not like, hundreds, of the things!

Well good for you for exercising self control. You are so right, so many people are giving away their animals these days. It is pretty sad.

Someone in Lafayette was giving away a FREE horse about 2 months and I called about it. I had a friend of a friend who was looking for a free horse, so I called the number and surely, the horse was FREE. They went to get the horse and she was a beautiful horse. So the owners found a good home and this friend found a beautiful horse.

But I agree with you Gracie, no such thing as free because the cost it takes to care for them is pricey.
