Sounds like you have your hands full. How old are you chickens? Getting no eggs is not good.

What do you feed them?
How far are you from Opelousas?

Life is out of control right now. All chickens were hatched in either december or january. We are 4 miles south of LSUE, so about 15 miles from opelousas. If u went to eunice animal clinic u can save your money by internet research and self diagnosis. I love dr ned to death, but he doesn't run diagnostic tests. His or andre's guess is as good as yours. Frankly mine is better than theirs because I'll call up some big breeder across the country to ask what to do. I just pick up meds and go for rabies shots.

Somethings just so weird with that. Those buffs & barred rocks shouls have been laying in May. Do you keep them locked up??? What did you feed the broilers???

ETA: Jeff asked the questions I was trying to get at. Got busy at work and just sent what I had already wrote!! <sigh>

Somebody did lay some eggs while they were loose. Dog likes eggs. Caged chickens at night. Got a few eggs. Turned loose again and no more eggs. Tied up dog. Made 13 nestboxes with fresh hay. No eggs yet. Gang rapes are down due to the aggressive gang being gone. 1 nice barred rock and 2 white roosters left. Barred rock is in heaven...he was last man on totem pole before. I have NEVER seen the whites try to breed anything. I was told they are too inbred to produce much if anything. I love learning vital information way after I could have really used it.

I think the two buff hens...one's half the size of the other...and the barred rock hen...she's pretty small too...are the only ones that ever laid. When we actually get an income from my husband's job...starting to think the whole thing is fictional...I'll cage those 3 with nest boxes and a good supply of laying pellets. The white ones can keep on eating bugs.

Okay so basically from what I read you just free range them. So you already know why your not getting any eggs and why your broilers didn't weigh hardly nothing!

Secondly, your meat birds (broilers) aren't bred to be layers. Your laying birds need feed & protein in order to lay - you have to feed them a good layer feed -- check with your local feed store & ask advice there. Something like Purina Layena (that's what I feed mine). Getting rid of the roosters harassing them will help. btw, don't have to waste a bullet -- just a sharp axe will do the job.
They may be laying eggs outside somewhere if they are used to free ranging all the time. Making them stay inside near the nesting boxes will help w/that too.

Good luck with them!

Quick good morning everybody! I have to grab a quick shower & go meet my "cousin-in-law" - they moved into a house they inherited from my late aunt (his grandmother) just up the road from us.

I try to walk every morning & so his young wife asked if she could go along, & dummy me said "sure".
Just

me already!

DO NOT attempt to walk with someone 20 years younger than yourself who works out 3 times a week in a real gym w/her sister! For her, this is a fun walk & she gabs the whole time while I huff & puff & sweat like a horse trying to keep up!

But it is pushing me to do a better job of getting in shape so I guess it's worth it.
Lord help me, I agreed to do the Susan Komen 5K walk (not run!!!) with them in October.

Good morning everyone. Is anyone having a problem with mosquitoes attacking you once you step foot outside? I was walking in the yard yesterday and a swarm of mosquitoes descended upon me. I ran !!!!!!!!!!! I was scared.

I'm afraid I am going to get West Nile.

)

Teelapins everyone is shooting you straight about the feeding. I have a friend about 15 yrs old that wanted to raise ducks, game birds and turkey. He couldnt believe the quantity of eggs my birds produce being he would get 1 maybe 2 eggs per day with almost 50 birds total. Found out he was free ranging and feeding scratch as a main diet. Got him to switch to a good layer and pen down the hens for at least 1/2 the day and now has more eggs than he can hatch now.
They need the protein and minerals from the layer.

Hope everyone else is doing good am still on the hunt for me a new rug

Just put out 11 RP poults so hopin my Pyrenees has it together and if not will be getting that rug soon
