"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hi yall! I'm Heather, and I am new here. I decided to go ahead and start raising chickens. I have my plan for the coop and hubs is as on board as he is going to get. I do have a couple questions though. I'm really afraid I will kill the baby chicks if I get day olds, and think it might be better to get them about 6-8 weeks old. Not already laying, just past the brooder stage. Do people sell them like this? Are they more costly? If they do sell them, where?

Welcome to La-yers!! Like Chris said there's lots of places you can look and yes they will be more expensive. They also have the chicken expo coming in April in Monroe. They might have what your looking for there!!

Nice have 4 in mine now hoping are fertile :)

Hi everyone! I've been out of touch for a while and am trying to wade through all the recent posts. Congrats Tabitha on your new baby. Nothing like a new baby in your home! Also, congrats to all of you with new chicks/chickens, ducks, lambs, foals, chicken coops, and guns. Sorry to generalize but you know who you are.

I've got four weeks of catching up to do and it would take too long to put all of the details. I, too, have my incubator up and running. Spring fever time!!! Kuntrygirl, I'll be packing heat too! My husband and I just completed a "conceal carry" course and I've been certified. I also have my coyote rifle ready for those varmits.

Gracie & Mike, this morning I've been reading four weeks worth of posts trying to catch up on what's going on with everyone. I was curious about your sebbie eggs and was going to post a question about it once I got caught up. I have a total of 11 eggs in the incubator right now and expect to get a couple more eggs today. Of the 11 eggs in the incubator, 4 were just added yesterday; out of the other 7 - 4 are developing and my first hatch should be around March 18th. Only 3 of my hens are laying. My saddlebacks are not yet laying, and the female from Gracie is not yet laying. Things are beginning to get very interesting!!

I'm done moving -- for now, and our house will be sold by April 25. Renovations to our next home will soon be put in "high gear". Hope to move for the final time in the very near future. Goose, duck, and chickens pens will be built very soon. My geese are occupying my dog kennel for now.

Take Care!!

Hi Barred Babies, thanks for the welcom! Thanks for the info as well. I think being in Slidell, Monroe will be kind of far for me to go for just a few, especially if Chris ends up having what we want pretty close to me!!! It's definately a thought to keep in mind in case he doesn't though!!

Welcome Karpadm76! I think that you should get biddies. They are so much fun, and I'm quite sure that you wouldn't kill them. They grow very quickly.

Thanks Missi, I am praying for a good hatch this year. Although, If I have a good hatch I'm not sure what I'll do with them all. I'd better get to building pens quickly.

I filled up my Brinsea a week ago with 28 eggs and I've already started saving up some more. My Sportsman should be here Tuesday!

I'm excited to see what kind of hatch I get with that bad boy. I think I will add all the eggs from the Brinsea into that when it get's here!!

Hey, I have a question.... How long can I save eggs before their hatch rate starts to decline??? It's 7 days right??

Thanks for the Welcome Grambysfarm! If I thought that a plastic bin and a clip on regular light would work, I might think about it, lol Still pretty sure I could screw that up as well though... I kill plants on a regular basis, so I'm pretty sure chickens wouldn't be that far of a stretch, although my dog is about 3 and as big as a horse.... Lol

Kind of thinking it would be fun though... Maybe if I go see if the feed store has them today, then hubs can't say no when he comes home tomorrow, but then again, I don't know if the clip on light and plastic bin would work...

Definetly closer!!

Hi, Heather! If Chris does not have all the breeds that you're looking for, you may want to go to the chicken sale and swap in Covington next month. It will be held on Sunday, March 18th, at O'Keefe Feed and Seed. I believe it's going to run from 12-4. I'm not sure what everyone will be bringing. I'm going just to see if anything tempts me!
