Yea, no kidding!
I have something sorta strange that happened today. A few weeks ago I went and picked up 17 NH's and 10 BR's chicks that were about a week old. I gott them home and I put them in a brooder with a RIR pullet that was about 2 weeks older then them. I was worried that the RIR might hurt the other chicks so I have been keeping an eye on her. So today my wife said that she noticed the chicks getting on top of the brooder so I might want to start putting my wire over the top of it. Sure enough, I walked in there and the RIR was up on the rim. When I walked in she jumped back down. I walked out and she jumped back up on the rim. This happened about 6 times while I was working on something else and had to go in and out of the room that the chicks are in. Finally, I put the wire over the top and went about working on something in the next room over from the chicks. So after a few minutes a strange noise or churp really, gets my attention so I walk back in there and just watch for a minute. The younger chicks are pecking at the back of the RIR and every time this happens she makes a strange churp. So I grab her and look her over to find a little blood on her back-side under her tail feathers. She was jumping up on the rim to get away from the other chicks, I get that.
So anyway I remove her from that and set her up in a wire cage inside of the brooder so that she can be with the other chicks but they can not peck at her giving her wound time to heal. I find it strange that the other chicks picked her out of all the chicks (28) in that brooder to pick on. Am I missing something here? Any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Chris
