"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Ok, so the new ducklings played in the water and ate crawfish with us and the chickens and the dog yesterday, we brought them in to their crate to sleep last night. We let the chickens out of the coop and put the ducklings in it so they could learn it this morning. I'm figuring a couple hours in the morning each day without the chickens will get them to learn it before they are sleeping in there with the chickens. Does this sound about right? The chickens kind of checked them out a little yesterday, but really didn't seem to care too much about them, other than the one we think is going to be a roo. He ran over to them and tried to peck at one of them's back. He got his lil butt chased off of course. They are only about a week old. I have been trying to research raising ducks, but it seem other than having water for them, they are about the same as chickens. Same food, same sleeping requirements, just an area where the chickens won't poop on them from the roosts, same treats, etc... Is this right? Is there a forum on here that I can read about them, or is this just chickens? I do know some of my research said not to let them into deep water until they are fully feathered out because they might drown, so our little makeshift hole is only about 2 inches deep. Oh crap, I see something on the side about Pekin ducks! Yippee!

I raise Pekins. They are a hoot! I have 3 hens and a drake that I just let run loose around the house. They are funny to watch. They've learned when it's feeding time for the cats and if I'm not around to supervise they will gobble up all of the cats' food. Sometimes, I have cats and ducks all eating from the same dish. They're nuts!!

Also, they lay all over the place. This spring I found two nests that had a total of 54 eggs. I've been hatching quite a few of them this spring.

This is my smooth breasted Gander who is not happy at all that I am interrupting him while he shows the new babies his favorite mud hole.

The new sheep! The little spotted one is the ram.

And a Toulouse goose who is just hatching her first clutch.

Wow! Four sebbies..., your Mother Goose did a good job! Do you expect the babies to be solid white like the parents?

I'll try to get pics of my babies tomorrow. I'm having a little problem with them pulling feathers from each other. One of my babies has a bare back. Any thoughts?

Mike, how are your sebbies doing?

Yes they are funny as all get out! These were "wild" ones found on some guys land living with baby Mallards as well, they guessed about a week or so old. They love the dog dish, the dog however, is not so impressed with that, lol

I attempted my first try at vent sexing them a few minutes ago and am absolutely positive that the one we thought was the boy is absolutely not a boy. The other two looked like girls as well, but I really don't feel that I got their vents open nearly as much as the bigger one, either which way, I never saw a duck penis, so I'm thinking 3 girls. I guess time will tell whether or not a you-tube video can actually teach you how to do this!! Haha!!

She shared a nest with her sister again. She took these four out, while the others were still hatching. I'm hoping to hatch at least 10 sebbies. I expect lots of whites!

I find that older goslings will pull feathers of younger ones, but haven't had a problem with those that are the same age :)

You'll be able to tell pretty soon by the way they quack. The noisy ones are the females, and the ones with the soft quiet quack are the males. Just like women, the ones with the big mouths complaining are the girls.

The males will also have a backwards curl on the top of their tail. I have some that are about 5 - 6 weeks old and you can clearly tell the males from the females from the sound of their quacks. I hope that helps.

Since it's near the end of laying season, I've decided to let the geese have the remaining eggs that they lay. I only have one goose out of six that is setting on her eggs (two eggs). The others are still laying. They each had a couple eggs in their nest. I'm going to leave them with the rest and see what happens. I have about 30 eggs in the incubator but, like I've said before, I haven't had great success hatching them. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a few more goslings.
