"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hey all...

Went to the Opelousas swap this past weekend. We were the clueless couple with the toddler boys that wanted to pet everything! Thanks to all of you who answered our questions and let my boys pet the chicks... My oldest is fired up about the chickens! He loves them! I can't wait til my hubbie builds the coop and we can get our own...

It's a girl!! It isn't loud, or well defined, but one of our three duckies quacked today in the pool about a dozen times!! I am so excited! Duck eggs coming in about 5 months!!

Looking for some vaccinating advice from Louisiana backyard breeders What should I vaccinate for? This is my first time hatching my own chicks and they are due Thursday. Local feed store has pox vaccination in stock. Would have to get any other from tractor supply. My worry is the mosquitos. Thanks for the advice in advance.

I don't vaccinate my birds for anything. I dust for mites and worm twice a year. I don't find that they need much more maintenance than that!

Gracie, clean, uninfested people that know what there land has been through in the last 10 or so years can do that! We ended up with mites when we got them, either from where we are, the chooks we bought, or the tractor we bought. Mostly it is good, but there are situations that have to be considered! After it's all figured out, go with it! I am!!!!

Last year, Dr. Barrileau with LSU told us that if we chose to vaccinate our birds the only vaccine that he recommended for backyard flocks was the FowlPox vaccine. I haven't vaccinated for this in the past but I can tell you that through the years I have lost many birds to FowlPox. Every year I plan to vaccinate but just haven't gotten around to it. Again, I'd like to vaccinate them this year. Living in south Louisiana there is no way that we can protect our animals from mosquitoes. Vaccinating is the best we can offer.

Very valid point!

My last batch of turkey poults hatched last night. The turkey hen that set up camp in the sticker bush hatched 8 babies last night. I moved them into a chicken stall. Folks, I think I"m done for the year with hatching poults. :th Thank GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!! Now it's to get these peafowl eggs to hatching. Guineas are scheduled to hatch on Saturday.

Do you think we will have a hot summer?

YES!!

Julie jogging? pshew I don't have the energy it'd take to muster up an evening jog. After my days activities/exercise if I don't get my daily amount of cardio from that, it'll just have to be enough, LOL
Come hang with me for a day or two you'll get plenty of exercise in and sleep well too. I used to have insomnia really bad about 10/15 years ago when I was a partying drunk mostly and complained once to my buddy about not being able to sleep he said: "well Fro, (nickname) you have to be tired to sleep",LOL. In other words needed to work my rump off instead of not so much working/partying too much.

Yea, I know it sounds crazy but that is what keeps me sane. I think, think, think and relax my mind when I run. I'm usually in the chicken yard for about 2 or 3 hours as well and I still have to get out and run. I deal with people and attitudes ALL DAY long. They force me to have to run. If I didn't, then I would be nuttier than a fruit cake at Christmas time. Boy, do I love fruit cakes at Christmas time. :drool :gig

I limit my jogging these days. Years ago, I would run an average of 5 - 6 miles a day and I would average about 40 miles a week. Now, I only jog 4 miles a day. I'm saving up for a cycling bike (cost about a thousand dollars), so I can get out and ride like Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France. Just call me Lana Armstrong in the Tour de Opelousas. :lau
