I went out to the coop this afternoon to let the hens out of their run and there they all were....lounging in the sun. They were laying not only on their feet but some were laying on their sides with feet sticking out. Is this normal? I have to say it was high 60's and looked like they were enjoying the warmth of the sun. When I called out to them, they all hopped up and came running.

Yes that's normal. Mine will line up on the deck and spread out their wings in the sun. I think they like the sun on their underwings.

Yup, and it still freaks me out. Nothing scarier than seeing a chicken on their side not moving.

When I added onto my coop this past summer, I was also adding some new windows to my garage. I got the smart idea to recycle the old 4' x 3' sliding, double-paned window, using it as a door into the new coop section.

Now, on these freezing mornings when the temperature doesn't make it out of the teens, my four older hens can be found lounging in the warm pine shavings as the sun shines through their new coop "view window". They look so relaxed and cozy, I almost want to climb in there and join them!

I run a home daycare. When one of my student's parents arrived to pick up their child, they quickly came over to tell me they thought a couple of my birds were dead! It was a warm fall day and the girls were out enjoying a few last rays for the year! LOL Having chickens this past year has been a learning experience for many!

Thanks for the replies. I almost want to bring a lounge chair out and relax with them since they look so content.
