I got a bug up my butt during winter and decided to build a coop and get some chicks. I didn't know anything about chickens, but I did some research, and my family and I couldn't be happier. We live in the city so I knew it would have to be a small coop. This is what I came up with.
Then I tried 2 times hatching my own chicks, and failed miserably. A friend ordered some chicks and gave me 2. I didn't know anything about marans but they are amazing. They love to hang out with the kids, and eat everything. I have a beehive and they love dead bees. We also give them meal worms and spent grain from my brewery (of course tons of starter feed).
This is such a cool hobby! It couldn't be easier. The only thing that scares me is there are 2 foxes roaming the neighborhood, and I free range them all day. But my dog ludwig loves them, she thinks she's a chicken. If your thinking of getting some, make haste! Can't wait until my first chocolate egg!
