ive had chickens once before, but didn't know nearly as much as ive learned just tonight reading all your stories and posts. Thank you ALL. my fiancé is building me a coop and we will be getting our babys first of june. I am so excited. and have lots of time to do more reading! we are starting with 2 barred rock. 2 rhode island and 2 buff orpington. for layers also 20 Cornish x for meat.... any pointers or tips welcome! :)

Glad to have you join us. It's best to have layers and meat birds separated. For one thing the meaties will eat everything they can find and would push the others away from the feeders. If you go to the "Raising backyard chickens," forum - it opens side tabs(right side) , scroll down and you will find a thread called MEAT BIRDS ETC.

Thank you Ladies. I will definitely do some more reading on the spots you mentioned. Again thanks ....have a great day :)

Welcome to BYC!

You will enjoy your Orpingtons. Very docile, friendly and great layers as well.

If you have any further questions, that is what we are here for. Enjoy your new babies and welcome to our flock!

thank you, since my last post (first post) there has been much progress on the coop. its in place .up and painted. tomorrow we will start the wire and hardware cloth. enclosing the run. living in northern Minnesota. way out in the tullies! lots of preditors, eagles, hawks, fox ,wolves, bobcats, weasles.coon. hopefully we will be able to out smart them~and keep our girls safe... and we ordered some guineas too! they say chickens are the "gateway drug". .... my fiancé is already dreaming up a turkey pen! :p
