I just candled my eggs (day 7), and out of 30, only 14 were fertile. All but two were shipped, and I know that can have something to do with it. Is this pretty typical, or am I just unlucky?

I think shipped egg fertility is somewhere around 40-50% (or maybe that is hatch rate). Either way, shipping certainly is not easy on fertile eggs. Did you follow the added guidelines for shipped eggs before you set them?

There's a difference between fertility and viability. If the shipped egg gets "scrambled" in transit, there will be no growth. Doesn't mean the egg wasn't fertilized though.

On the other hand, there could be a rooster problem at your breeders and you could ask how fertility has been for their hatches.

Have you read this article on incubating shipped eggs? I really like it: https://mbasic.facebook.com/notes/f...beth-white-via-cheryl-shires/548615281826504/

I'm sure it's more of a shopping problem than a breeder problem. It doesn't help that this is my first hatch. That article had a lot of great info. Thanks!
