I have 2 LED (light emitting diode) night lights in the coop. They are the ones that can do red/blue/white. Just enough light to see by at night. You should be able to get them at any hardware store.

Red light makes it impossible for the chickens to see blood on each other. This stops picking and cannibalism.

I've seen the 40 watt bulbs PatandChickens talks about at Home Depot.

Maybe you could find a string of red xmas lights.

I don't think chickens need the light after 6 weeks of age. If you want them to lay over winter, and are trying to increase perceived daytime, then you will need a regular bulb.

if you just want small light to see by,,, use a small x-mas string of em,, or one of those "fake candles" they put in windows . they usually have a plastic base,, and you could screw it to the ceiling.

Wal-Mart sells 25 watt red light bulbs in their hardware dept, light section. Also, most lighting stores carry colored (red) sign lights that are 11 watts. I use the sign lights in the summer and a red heat lamp in the winter months.

I looked at a local pet store the other day (PetSmart) and in the reptile section they have 50 watt infrared mini flood light type bulbs. If memory serves me correctly they were about $10.

You can take a look at Petsmart.com 's website and search for "infrared". They have heat bulbs as low as 50 watts.

The month I got my chicks, my electricity bill was $20 higher than normal, just for using a 100 watt light all the time. Remember to use the lowest wattage that gets you enough heat.

For light to see by, or to keep your chickens laying, you can use LED lights. LED lights put out almost no heat, however. You can get LED christmas lights.

You could just get some red (or any color) plastic wrap, like the wrap used in Easter baskets. And wrap a lamp shade with it using any regular bulb you'd like. Put small holes in the top for ventilation.

I would think the chickens would peck it to death. Possibly causing a fire. ​

Update - I got a 50W IR at Petsmart. Now, if I can just find a wireless thermometer that actually works reliably so I know whether the temp is anywhere close to where I want it!
