I'm a single mom with very basic building skills and I need to build a coop. I live in a part of FL that I don't have to worry about cold but need to protect from heat, rain and wind. My backyard has an 8 ft privacy fence so predators aren't an issue.

I was thinking about doing a loose brick floor
(I have some from a remodeled landscaping
job) and putting in posts to attach 6x4 wooden fencing panels to. I would then put a tin roof on top. Basically making a three sided shed with nesting boxes on one side and roosts on the other. Feed and water in the center. It can get wet when it rains so I am hoping the brick will make it drier for them. What do you think? They free range in the back yard.

This is an interesting concept...I don't know about a brick floor. That might be tough to clean and a bit too hard. In reality, you don't need a floor. You can use the ground as your floor and just build a structure off of it. the bricks can be used as foundation, but I would just leave dirt or lawn as the flooring.

You could also do sand as the floor in the coop. It seems to stay drier then dirt, and dries faster when it get wet from rain. Also easy and quick to clean up....you can pick up sand at Lowes in 50 lb bags or if you live near a beach you could "borrow" a bucket full every day .

I like the idea of nest boxes on one side and roost bar on the other. You may consider an old bench or panel below the roost bar which will give you a place below it for the feed and water. This will free up the center area. A brick floor on grade would be good to raise it up a bit to help keep the floor dry. I would for sure add a deep layer of pine chips on that. A dirt floor will be muddy as the chickens scratch through any bedding. Not sure of what type of fence panels you will use but they will work best if they are solid to keep out drafts and rain. You can cut a few holes up high for vents and and a hinged flap to each opening. Certainly within the scope of basic building skills.
