Where can I have this done? I just bought a LP record Westward Ho (finally!) that was in perfect condition and I wanted to transfer the music on to CD.

Not sure how I would look up in my telephone directory? What business would do this type of service?

I'd be checking with friends and family to have them check with their friends and families to hunt down a known luddite still in possession of a good quality turntable and a computer with an acceptable sound card (we're around). Pretty trivial process once you find the right person. I'd also check with locally owned computer retailers (not many of those left, either), might remember a customer who bought equipment for this specific purpose. Maybe younger family members know who is spinning and sampling...

No commercial CD of LP (Sons of the Pioneers? Roland Shaw? etc.?) available?

Check Best Buy or similar stores. They sell software that helps accomplish this. I remember one that was about $80 a few years ago. But of course you need a turntable that will accept cords of course.

I don't have a MP3 player.

Are you sure? Most computers have one, or you can download ITunes for free which will play mp3's...

I thought MP3 players are handheld devices like a pocket thingy with ear buds.

Got one four year old computer that has Vista and laptop also Vista programs. It does play music when I go on UTube. Hubby does copy the music off from internet without a problem but sometimes trying to get anything else out, its difficult.

Yeah, they make them as handheld devices too, but you most likely have one right on your pc. Windows Media Player for example, plays mp3's, and so does ITunes, which you can download for free at www.itunes.com My pc is from 2005 and plays mp3's with no trouble.

As far as the software on how to convert LP's to mp3, I don't know anything about that, but I'm sure there's software out there that you can do that with, like Highlander said.
