So first of all I wanted to share their stories with everyone who has had a duck or chicken or both survive a terrible trauma and show there is hope and light at the end of the tunnel.

Lucky's story: Hatched on Aug 2, 2022 and she was 7 months old when she and her sister Champ were attacked by a dog that got in their pen. Both suffered injuries from their mid backs to tail, broken wing and legs. The vet did all they could but ultimately advised us that it's up to them and the will power to live. Lucky and Champ both survived but the recovery was long and their lives were completely changed. Lucky lost the majority use of her legs and suffered from PTSD. She did not like anyone or anything getting close to her or approach her. She would experience severe panic attacks and ultimately she just stopped caring for herself as if she was letting go. In Jan of 2024 she lost her sister Champ ultimately to the internal Injuries she sustained from that attack. Lucky went in to a catatonic state of depression and I felt so helpless... Then came Chunky.

Chunky's story: Hatched in March of 2024. I received Chunky from my local tractor supply. Chunky had that butt problem where the poop accumulates around the vent....apologies for not remembering the name. Anyway, because of that issue Chunky was getting attacked by the other chicks in the trough and ended up also getting his baby chick foot broken. So my local tractor supply guy saw me that day and asked if I would take him. Of course I said yes. I am very much one to give any animal a chance if they have a will to live. I brought Chunky home and now their story begins.....

I had both baby Chunky and Lucky arranged on opposite sides of the living room so there was no worry of Lucky getting anxiety or a panic attack. However, Chunky had his own plans. For weeks to maybe a couple months i watched Chunky attempt to make his way across the living room to reach Lucky, but who else was watching this chick hop around because he couldn't walk properly and make an effort every day...Lucky was. In this time I saw Lucky's behavior begin to change. She was curious but I think also inspired by Chunky. She slowly started to show more self care for herself again. It gave me hope so I just let this behavior of both Chunky and Lucky continue to see what happens. One day returning from work, Chunky made it finally to Lucky. They were now on the same area rug lol. Again, now Chunky inch by inch would scoot closer to Lucky everyday. Lucky would make her noises at him, but she wasn't panicking, which was a first. I continue to let this play out. Chunky was determined to officially get close to Lucky and when he did he kept hoping around her like an excited dance since he made it and you know what!?! Lucky did not panic! Instead she watched him and let him do his thing till he finally landed right next to her and fell asleep. This was the first time since Lucky's attack that I had seen her let an animal get so close to her like that. With Chunky by her side now the progress in lucky began to show even more after a month of being together. Lucky was now no longer even scared of me. She finally let me hold and love on her again, but with limits. She does have trigger spots they she does not care to be touched. Once I learned those I was able to take care of Lucky properly.

Chunky helped Lucky breakdown her mental barriers she developed from her trauma. He is her support animal and she is his life's purpose. I am a strong believer things happen for a reason. From the chance Chunky was given to me, to the effort he made to get to Lucky, to inspiring Lucky to try once again to ultimately forming the strongest bond I have ever seen in friendship. Chunky saved our family from further heartbreak to overwhelming love and joy in seeing them both thrive with their disabilities. As long as they have each other their is nothing these two can't do.

Thanks for reading their story! Remember their is always a light to every darkness. You just have to find it or it will find you.
