Last night, I had a momentary lapse in brain function. Out in the coop it's the three girls: Kiev, my black Polish; Fajita, a bantam Old English Game hen; and Marsala, a silver-laced Wyandotte. She was the baby, she's only about 2 months old or so (and all legs!) However, I just got a tiny little white-crested blue Polish, Bleu. I took a wire pet carrier out to the coop and turned it on its side, so the wider, bottom wire openings were accessible. That way, Bleu had a safe spot if she wanted to have some peace. Her own feed is in there, her own water, and a little crate. So far so good, no troubles in the household.

Well last night, the brain went right out the window. I went in, picked up baby, and stuck her in the rabbit hutch for the evening (the hutch has two nesting boxes in it, and a little open space), up off the ground.... not thinking to look and see if it was already occupied.

Went out a little while later to peek in just to check on her. I realized I could only see two girls on the roosting bar. Uhhh... I went around to the egg door and peeked in. There was little Bleu, canoodling up right with Fajita. Fajita had been in the box when I put the little interloper in, and instead of flipping her feathery lid (like usual), she had let the baby come right up and snuggle for the evening. I decided to let them be, they seemed content enough.

Came out in the morning, they're both standing at the door, waiting to be let out. No drama, no pecking. Bleu just standing right under Fajita, looking at the door. So... okay. Let them out. Down the ramp they came for breakfast, side by side.

Baby roams a bit, and Fajita keeps about half an eye on her. I put in some frozen watermelon because it's hot, Fajita would take a bit, go over to the wire "safe house" to check on Bleu, chitter a second, then she'd go back. While Fajita is the smallest one, size-wise, after the baby... the other two girls don't give her any trouble. She's a tough little cookie. If baby is near her, the other two keep their distance. *chuckle*

So what could have ended badly, I was darn lucky!

Little Bleu in her safe house

Itty bitty pouf!

Her big "sis" Kiev. My very first BYC, and the lucky
survivor of a hawk attack.

Fajita, my surprising little mum.

Marsala, lovely (leggy) lady.

Kiev and "her" baby. When Marsala came, she kept trying to get under
Kiev. Thankfully (for Kiev), she's outgrown the habit.

And tonight...
Yeah. Stone-cold witch, Fajita is.
