Lump Behind Chicken's Eye

Hello chicken lovers,

This morning as I was hanging out with my chickens, I realized Hedwig had a little lump near her right eye. It doesn't seem to bother her much. She had stopped laying three days prior to its appearing. We applied dabs of tea tree oil to try to reduce any infections.

Does anybody know what it is and how to treat it?

Do you see any dark spots on the lump? If not, I would suspect it being a cyst. Is it hard to touch? Use caution with tea tree oil, as it can be toxic to chickens. Cysts around the eyes can be common. I had a RIR with a hard cyst over his eye that did not get bigger.

It's more yellow than dark. I remember it being soft.

That sounds like it could be hardened pus from a peck or injury. You might want to lance it with a sterilized needle, and try to squeeze out any pus.

She probably did get pecked,
I know our top hen is going broody, so they are probably all redoing the pecking order
