Hello my trusted chicken experts! I need advice on how to continue care for my girl Pearl. I discovered a prolapse 3 days ago when she laid a bloody egg- I brought her to isolation in the laundry room and have been doing the things I’ve read here for prolapse care-aside from taking her to the vet which financially isn’t an option. I’m doing daily warm bath soaks, prep H, ky jelly while pushing it back in, vetericyn spray.

2 concerns: first, the dried poop/possible scab (see picture) that I cannot get off. I don’t want to pick it if it’s scabbed but also worried about infection if I push it all back in and it stays. How the heck can I get that off? Warm bath soaks are not breaking it down at all!

Second, it immediately comes back out as soon as I attempt to push it in. How can I get it to stay in?!

Any advice is greatly appreciated! I’m not ready to give up on her but I’m feeling discouraged that I see very little to no progress. 😩

The scabbing is rather common in vent prolapses, and will eventually slough off, even if it goes back inside. I would just continue what you are doing keeping it from drying out, and try to push it back in 1-2 times a day. Sometimes it can take a week or so for some to stay in. Let us know how she does.
