This is approximately 1 1/2 year old Black Copper Marans hen, she seems to be eating and drinking fine, but has a lump on her face between her beak and her eye. I noticed it a few days ago. It does not seem to bother her (no scratching, rubbing, or head shaking) and she is eating and drinking normally.

I just finished a round of Gallimycin in all the chicken yards as we have had a few wet weeks recently, so I don't think it is a sinus infection or the antibiotic would have cleared it up. I am wondering if it it a tumor. I did research about eye worms but I do not think that's what it is, as the eye itself seems normal, and no seeping/bubbling/itching. I will catch her tonight and inspect the lump more carefully, and also take a look inside her mouth to see if it looks normal.

Even though she had gallimycin, I would probably treat just her with Tylan50 since the swelling looks like a respiratory disease. She may have been resistant to the first antibiotic or maybe didn't drink enough of it. The Tylan50 dose is 1/2 ml.(large fowl) orally for 5 days, or as a shot in the breast muscle daily for 3 days.

Thanks, I was contemplating Tylan. Never done the injectable meds for chickens, guess it's time to try! I have another hen that I think needs Tylan, too, for an eye infection, so I'll just do them both at once. Someone suggested it was fowl pox, but it just doesn't look like that to me and my birds have had it already.

After 4 days of Tylan injection I see no change so I will not give the 5th dose. My hen's lump is obviously not respiratory.

It was also suggested to me it may be a form of Fowl Pox, the wet version that is dangerous. But as her mouth is clear and after 6 days the lump has not turned into a weeping sore I think it is probably not fowl pox.

I am thinking it must be a tumor but I will keep an eye on it. Maybe one of those other things will help your hen.

The Tylan injections should only be for 3 days--orally it is only given 5 days. Keep us posted on what happens. I hope she doesn't have a tumor.

Ah. OK, I see now where you said 3 days, someone else told me Tylan injections for 3-5 days depending on severity. But I have not given it today and I don't think I will, so she was on it for 4 days total.

Someone else just suggested to me to try to lance it and see if anything drains, then treat with triple antibiotic ointment. I may try that tonight.

Hi there,
My chicken currently has the same lump between her nostril and left eye except it’s even smaller. She is acting completely normal.... no symptoms of illnesses/diseases. Did you discover the problem with your chickens lump? Possible diagnosis?

Thank you,

Dani
