I went to give my chickens a snack yesterday and noticed one of my girls was having trouble getting the food down. She was interested in the food and seems to be fine otherwise. No sneezing, no discharge. I did check the lump and it feels hard to me. She is walking around today and seems fine, I did see her drink water. I am concerned she won't be able to eat. Can you tell me if you believe this is a respiratory disease or maybe a tumor?

I checked again and there is no white or yellow material or fluid in her beak. I did check the lump out again and it is not just between her wattles. It is about the size of a golf ball and it does feel hard. I did notice that her breath is stinky. She wants to eat, she is interested in food, but doesn't seem like she can get much down.

Please get some photos of the inside of her beak.

I would also check to make sure her crop is emptying overnight. If it's not and you see nothing inside the beak, then you can try treating for sour crop.

My wife and I went and looked down her mouth with a flashlight and we did see some yellow stuff in the back of her mouth. Could it be a canker?

Is it mucus or something solid? How does her throat smell? Is a picture possible? Canker (trichomonas) could be a possibility, and it can spread from the inside of the beak down into the crop. It is a parasitic disease that pigeons and some wild birds carry, and it smells bad. Certain drugs, such as Fish Zole (metronidazole) or ronidazole found online for pigeons can treat it. Here is a good article:

How does the crop feel—empty, full, hard, doughy, or puffy?

Her crop feels empty and yes, her mouth smells. It looked like a yellow crust. I will try and get a picture tomorrow.

Then I would try to treat for canker, or see a vet locally. Here is a link for metronidazole (Fish Zole) and the dosage for a 5 pound chicken is 250 mg daily given orally:

Ronidazole is sold here:

As a tablet, how do you give this to the chicken? Also, she is one of 4 hens in the pen. Should I do something proactively for the other hens? Should I be adding ACV to their water?
