lunar eclipse

Lunar eclipses happen quite frequently. Lunar eclipses on the Winter Solstice don't happen often.

Nasa says the last time was in the 1600s...

Yep, and it's COMPLETELY clouded over here and has been for hours. Little likelihood it is going to change, so I'll probably end up going to bed since I'm not feeling great anyway.

Even more cool -- NASA says on their site (a link is in the first page of the solstice eclipse thread) that there has only been one instance of an eclipse like this one since "Year 1." So, this will be the second one like this in over 2000 years...

I guess occurring on the same night as the winter solstice is just a coincidence, yes? Won't effect the sight of the eclipse but is of interest?
Last lunar eclipse was 3 years ago, next will be 2014, but the next one occurring on the night of the winter solstice will be ~327 years from now. I'm staying up to watch it, begins in about 2 more hours

It's raining here, but I'm going to stay up just in case. No sense going to bed...I'd never be able to make myself get up. The eclipse should be full around midnight PST.
