Hello everyone-- after a period of lurking and learning and learning some more, I thought it was time to say hello and join in. We are new to chickens - so new in fact that we are just building our coop and have not yet purchased our first chicks - which answers the question "which came first, the chickens or the coop?" <giggle>. We will be purchasing 6 chicks this Tuesday from a local lady we met at the TSC who gave us so much information and let us visit her place and see her set up and her chickens. She has the two types we were interested in - the black sex links and the golden comets - which makes it even better. I was a bit concerned about buying from a feed store for health and temperament reasons.

My husband and I live in Indiana and are empty nesters - well, our children are grown and on their own but our home is far from empty. We share our lives and our home with six dogs - 5 English Mastiffs, three of which we show in conformation and obedience, and one staffie bull terrier. We moved to the country a year and a half ago to an old abandoned place and have been making it our own. We LOVE the country!! Since the inside of our home is pretty packed -lol - we thought it was time to add some life to the outside - thus, the chickens.

In the mastiff world we are known as Horizon Mastiffs, so we thought we'd keep it simple with our chickens and go with the same call name. We do not have any plans to breed chickens or show or any of that. We want to raise the chickens for eggs for us and our dogs. But who knows what the future holds!

So, I think that introduces us. We appreciate the wealth of knowledge shared here and especially like the tone and culture we've noted here - everyone is so helpful and friendly!

So hello to you all!!

Hello and welcome. We're soooooooooo glad you're here! When you get a chance I would love to see some pictures of your farm. Sounds like you're living the life, county, dogs, and now chickens. What could be better? Also post some pictures of your chicks when you get them. You're so far ahead of the game finding someone local with knowledge and the breeds you were interested in.

Welcome to BYC!!

You've got to post some pics of your mastiff's-they're one of my favorite breeds of dogs!! Trust me, we'd all love to see them and your new chicks! Congrats on your new chicken adventure, and beware-you'll be adding to your flock before long, so go large on the coop!! LOL ~Trish
