(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
New chicks arriving on April 9th and April 30th. Yay!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Right now we have none, but in a few short weeks, we will have 7 peeps.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We're getting 2 French Black Copper Marans, 2 Salmon Faverolles, 1 Dominique, 1 Easter Egger, and 1 Sapphire Olive Egger.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We don't know yet! I'm guessing we're going to love their antics and their eggs, but we'll love cleaning their coop the least.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, hiking, reading, and cooking.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We moved out of the city and up into the woods last year, having recently purchased 8 acres of forested land in SW Washington. Our dog and our cat are living their best lives right alongside us, and the previous owners left behind an adorable bunny that will eventually live with the hens. We're just starting on our country adventure, but will have a large garden this year and hope to add a colony of bees to the mix sometime in the near future. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of goats join the family in the next couple of years, but I'm getting ahead of myself... and I'm sure you see where this is going.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have no idea how I found this site, or how long ago, but I started reading all of your amazing stories and insight more frequently last year when I knew that chickens were in our future. I could've sworn that I was a registered user already, but after seeing the February post about lurkers I double-checked. And to my surprise, I found out that I was a lurker!! Well, I am a lurker no more! I am sure I will have plenty of questions along the way, and hopefully, a few wins to report.
Our biggest concern at the moment, and the topic I've been reading the most about, is coop/run safety. We have every predator known to chickens on our property, or so it seems, so we're working out the best way to protect our new girls from hawks, owls, coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, opossums, etc. I'm looking forward to pulling from all of this community's experiences to make sure we provide the healthiest and happiest environment for them.
