hello everyone, my name is Luther Thomason. I am completely green and new to the chicken life. I have friends and family that are doing and my family wants to use this as a hobby.

We are looking to build a coop as cheaply as possible, get some hens, and collect some eggs.

I need help

It is good to have you here!

Welcome to BYC!
:yesss: We are glad you joined our flock!
Jump right in and make yourself at home.
Free wood is great for putting together a coop.
Now sure where you are located but you might want to check your local Craigslist's free section.
This video will help you learn how to navigate this site:

Coop Ideas:
Chicken Coops

BYC has an APP!

Well too cheap and you may not be able to keep chickens alive. They need a safe coop and protection from predators. Everything loves to eat chicken. Chicken wire will keep chickens in but, does nothing to keep predators out.

Please check out the "Learning Center," the best place to start a poultry education. Then the coops thread to know what is needed for chickens (roost, nest boxes, etc.) AND the predator threads to find out how to protect your birds.

Hi and welcome to BYC

On this link you'll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find Your State Thread
