Just joined up today, although I have raised chickens for year they have been the super hardy free ranging type. Chance brought us some lovey Orp roosters and lead my down the path to exhibition blacks, soon to add some blues and white. Its all in fun though, with my daughters 4-H and maybe some local open shows in mind. I would LOVE to find some Sumatra breeders willing to part with eggs for a 4-H free range project here on the farm. She wants to put an equal number of blue, black and splash roosters and hens and see if one color dominates the hatches. I told her the splashes might get carried off by hawks and she said that was part of the experiment.
