Good evening,
I have 6 RIR and a Betty and I have found they perch in the run but they prefer to sleep lying down in their coop.
The coop has a nest box section and then a bigger section which has narrow pieces of wood separating it - to act as perches.
When I look at them they are all sleeping on the floor and not 'perching'.
Is this ok?
I clean the babies out every other day so they aren't actually laying down in their poop.
thanks in advance :)

Hi, and welcome to backyard chickens. I have a few hens that will occasionally try to sleep in the nestboxes, and I just will move them up on to the roost when they do that. ( Same when they try to lay an egg on the roost)

My 6 chickens would all try to cram into one nesting box and would sleep in a dog pile. For 2-3 straight nights I went out and moved them to the roost after they were settled. I also put a ladder in for them to get to the roost easier. They should have been able to get up without the ladder, but I figured the ladder would give them options.

Are the perches in the coop narrower than the ones they use during the day?
