Anyone else wonder if being able to cook has been put down so much that people are embarassed to try/admit they can? IE if a working woman actually likes to cook... 'yeah right!" is the typical response... it's the response my MIL gives me (she's also a stay at home) when I say I like cooking... so I can imagine the added snub if you're out there claiming to be a career woman, but *gasp* you settle right into the kitchen like the (abused, keep 'em preggers and barefoot) housewives of the past. Men folk don't fair any better. MANY generations have viewed cooking as 'women's work' and thus it is NOT cool for a guy to do it... nevermind that most chefs are MALE, but of course they're all 'that way'

If you are a guy and you cook anything fancier than ramen then you're gay, mama's boy, etc. If you're a girl and like to cook it's because you're not really interested in your career, just want to be a homemaker.... some of this is changing, but it's still around enough to annoy me.

My uncle is one of the ones that goes in for the 'women's work' attitude... ironic since he was raised in restaurants and is actually a GOOD cook... donno where the devil he got that idea from... goober. His brother is the exact opposite, he does a good portion of the cooking, and his wife (who loathes cooking) handles the cleaning... a nice balance that works for them. *shrug* takes all kinds.

I like to cook. One of the few parts of stay at home mom job that I really like. I'm always a little amazed when people say they can't cook. If you can read, you can follow a recipe. Do it enough times and you learn what works and what doesn't. My neighbor has three kids and usually a couple of foster kids. They think a home cooked meal is made by Stouffers I understand people who don't like cooking, or who don't consider being able to follow a recipe cooking, but not knowing how to cook always baffles me.

Tonight is stir-fry, and homemade dumplings. My first time making dumplings. Wish me luck.
