We had 5 kids on glass factory workers wages. You ate what was on your plate or you went hungry. You weren't forced to eat something you didn't like, but there was nothing else to fill the spot. Thankfully my ma is a wonderful cook!!

Shoot, my butt didnt get up from the table unless I ate what was on my plate. They made an exception on liver. They tried to force me to eat that and I promply threw up. Liver day at my house resulted in hamburgers or hot dogs for me that day

Good grief pizza is so easy! Take off what you don't want,, someone else will put it on their slice!
My sister gives her kids an out. She lets them pick three foods that they hate. They never have to eat those three foods even if they are served. Everything not on their list of three they have to eat. Every six months or so they revisit the list and the kids can adapt it. Pretty clever. When they get whiny about something being yucky, she points out that it wasn't on the list. That moves the battle from "Mom is so mean" to "I have to make a choice". It has ended dinner time battles for her (and let's face it, most dinner issues are just battles for control).
My parents held to the three bite rule. You can choke down three bites of anything, if you have enough milk to wash it down.

I know autistic kids have a stronger preference for things, but he never is made to TRY anything else. He didn't here at first, but has started asking to try things now. I love those knuckleheaded kids!!
LOL! My best friends kids are like that! The boy (15)only eats turkey bacon for EVERY meal...turkey bacon ONLY!! That's at home. Here, they eat what I fix, and generally love it and then their mom calls wanting the recipe later. The boy still eats mostly turkey bacon at home though

Yep,, and I am IN control at my table! My son,, only once did he try it,, he came home from my brother's house and tried what their kids did, hehhheheheheehhe he never tried it again! I cooked his spinach! I know he prefers it raw and I told him "You want a choice? You got a choice,, eat it or don't"

Amen. Mine don't love brussel sprouts or greens but they'll eat them, and I don't even have to break out the whip.
Of course, mine also actually LIKE broccoli, asparagus, spinach... *shrug* Goes back to when you started with baby food. You start with veggies, get them liking those, THEN move to the sweet fruits. If you do it the other way around you're in for it.
Separate meal wise... that is SO my SIL. Her hubby is the pickiest eater I've ever known... example.. no green veggies (common enough) but also even with corn he's picky. Can't be fresh corn, cob or otherwise. Can't be frozen corn. Has to be canned corn. And not just any canned corn. Nope it has to be Green Giant. And not just any GG, it has to be the shoepeg. Now don't get me wrong, that stuff is pretty yummy. But for pete's sake it's freaking corn... just one example... the only soup he'll eat is Campbell's (no off brands) Chicken Noodle... and he does NOT add water to the concentrate (gag)... even have to have particular ice cream on hand or he just refuses to eat. And this is a grown man... is it any wonder, with that example, that his boys are terrors at the table? I think not. But, having mom cave on every issue doesn't help, and that's been since day one.
Like you said, are they going to cart Pediasure with them at 15? I can just see it now... the college care package... full of cookies, shoepeg corn, and pediasure.

I have a 4 year old that isn't too picky but I do try to plan meals around her favorites (mac n cheese, green beans, corn, etc). The rule on trying new things is that you have to take ONE bite, if you don't like then you don't have to eat it, but at least give it a chance. Sometimes though she makes me crazy saying she isn't hungry but immediately goes to the fridge for yogurt or a popsicle. I tell her no ma'am you can eat what is served or you can just not eat. My mother thinks I'm horrible, but she would have beat our tails until we DID eat it. My kid would puke if I made her drink one of those nasty pediasure's, they are NASTY!
I am SO happy I do not have TV.....
My BIL's kids pull the same crap; always getting 'special' meals or items at supper, they are never made to sit and finish their plates, and they are immediately rewarded with ice cream and cookies. My kids are forced to eat as much as they can and sit at the table until they are finished before they are allowed to eat the treats.
These parents also bring with them lunch boxes of 'snacks' for only their kids. Junk like koolaid gushers, fruit roll-ups, all highly processed sugary foods along with things like funyuns. I wish they would not bring them at all since it is rude not to share and I really don't want my kids to think that these are acceptable snacks.
One other thing; God forbid they drink white milk, my MIL ALWAYS buys a gallon of chocolate milk when these kids come to visit...... if it was my house I would tell them to get it themselves.
As far as my kids not liking foods, they have to at least try it or eat a little of it. No substitutions here; it won't kill them to not eat one item at a meal.
