Madagascar Hisser Babies PICS!!!

Around here my chickens would get em...they eat any insect that they see.

For those curious that do not know, here is some info on them from Wikipedia

The Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa), also known as the hissing roach or simply hisser, is one of the largest species of cockroach, reaching 2–3 inches (5-8cm) at maturity. They are from the island of Madagascar off the African coast, where they can be found in rotting logs.

Unlike most cockroaches, they are wingless. They are excellent climbers and can scale smooth glass. Males can be distinguished from females by their thicker, hairier antennae and the pronounced "horns" on the pronotum. Females carry the ootheca (egg case) internally, and release the young nymphs only after the eggs have hatched. As in some other wood roaches, the parents and offspring will commonly remain in close physical contact for extended periods of time. In captivity, these insects can live 5 years. They feed primarily on vegetable material.

I actually have some questions about the care of them. What size tank do you keep them in? Also, what do they eat? What kind of substrate do they typically need? Are they very noisy or only when they are scared?

I've always had my eye on these guys in the pet stores. I may actually have some old tanks lying around! I remember holding some at a museum long ago and they were so much fun.

Mine are on dirt and moss. Made to look very natural. They dont make noise unless upset. You can keep them in the little plastic Kritter Keeper cages or ant tank bigger. Mine are in a 10 gallon fish tank. As far as food, protein is the major thing. Cat food dod food and the occasional fresh fruit or vegetable. And water you can use cricket crystals or a container with stuffing out of a pillow in it ti prevent drowning. Very low maintainence and fun to watch.

Update on the babies. They are going thru their first molt so they are starting to get bigger

Hmmm...they sound like a lot of fun. I actually have a five-ish gallon kritter tank laying around some where. It had a crack in it so I couldn't put water in it anymore. I'll think about it for a few days and get back to you! My room mates and I had mice as our apartment pets last year, but when my one room mate left, she took them with her. I betcha a tank of cockroaches would look real neat next to my ten gallon fish tank! LOL I will definitely let you know though.

No problem just let me know. I have plenty of them. Just make sure that the lid on the container you have closes securely!!! And it the top has any openingsmthat they are VERY VERY small. Just let me know when yall decide.

They Hissers are getting bigger and i really need to get them out of here. If anyone is interested Please let me know. They are getting close to an inch long now. $5 shipping and $2.50 for 5 hissers. Let me know
