I'm no carpenter but I managed to make my own double nest box for my laying hens tonight. I looked at the simple plywood box Meyers has in their catalog and figured out how to do this on my own. I have 6 pullets just starting to lay - they are 20 weeks right now - I'm getting 1-2 eggs per day.

The comment someone made about looking for your eggs like an Easter Egg Hunt every day really got my attention

so I decided to do something about it.

I thought the plywood nest box I found at Rural King was pretty flimsy and I could at least do that or better (I think mine is better - at least sturdier).

For a girl - determined and stubborn - I think my hens will find it pretty spiffy! I'm on my way out to the barn to put it in their little pen and fill it up with straw - I hope they like it!

Good Job. Now don't you feel good that you made it with your own two hands? Of course, we need pics!! Sure your girls will love them, once they get use to them. Sometimes they kind of freak out with new things.

My girls ignored the wonderfully engineered, sturdy, can-withstand-earthquake nest boxes my DH so lovingly made. They lay in the old iron horse feeder!

Good job!

This weekend, I'm gonna make the wooden feeder that was posted awhile back...if I can find it......

I took it to the barn and the girls loved checking it out - they were all trying to climb in at the same time - even the roos had to see what it was all about!

It's not fancy schmancy - just plain and practical so here's hoping my girls are not real prissy. I live in Amish country so they aren't used to frills!

I have 3 Dominiques and 3 Barred Rocks that were hatched Sept 29th and are just starting to lay - I have 4 Barred Rocks I hatched on Nov 5th and 5 more that hatched on Nov 28 - I put different colored leg bands on them by their hatch date to keep them straight.

Now I am setting 15 Light Brahmas and after that I am going to set a hatch of Buckeyes - I'm gonna be up to my eyeballs in chickens and eggs pretty soon! And I want some Buffs too and I like the Columbian Wyandotte and some silkies and some bantams and some....
