Maggots on duck

Pics
If there is no break in the skin then it would be categorized as Obligatory myiasis most likely caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax which feed off of live tissue.

Those are big maggots right? These were not that big.

I figure they were feeding off dead tissue (just normal dead skin cells among the feathers) and their existence caused more dead tissue to form.

I'm going to blunt, your duck looks very rough so there definitely has to be some improvements that can be made to her environment.

That her normal appearance. She always had a Don King hairdo.

I absolutely love her hairdo. It is beyond adorable.

Is she able to get around at all? You could potentially make a "handicap" pond for her if she can.

Yeah I love that hairdo too. I also have a couple Rouens with that doo.

Yes she can walk fine other than stepping on her foot. She can even climb up the steep mud bank out of the pond. She doesn't really like walking, but she isn't crippled.

At the pond she spent most of her life in the water, certainly at night because of predators. Mostly she got out of the water to eat. If I see all the birds out of the water I start suspecting there is a turtle.

I thought of digging a hole and lining it with plastic, but then I couldn't drain the water. The water gets soiled every day, but the kiddie pool is so easy to flip over to dump out the water and refill.

Maybe the best thing to do is take her back to the pond. I just have to be available to watch the geese until they get used to each other again. But right now my time is divided with a cat that gave birth 3 weeks ago and may have something left inside her causing an infection which is causing her not to eat and possibly the milk drying up. That's how I found a vet who sees birds. I have too many calamities to manage at the moment.

All this talk about what animals should eat, I'm lucky if I can find anything this cat will eat. That prescription food she ate at the vet now she won't touch, so I bought all that expensive food for nothing. She seems to like deer meat best (high in iron I guess).

If someone could recommend a good B-vitamin I'd be all over that because I need it for the duck and the cat.

Yep, I'm convinced the maggots are causing the wound. There is no wound before the maggots come and there is no way for her to be injured.
Maggots feed on dead flesh. They will not cause a wound.
There is a surgery known as larval debridement therapy where fly lava (maggots) are placed in the body to eat away at dead flesh but leave the live stuff alone. If they caused wounds, then this type of thing would not be possible.
sorry, that is just an example I'm using but I guess you understand me.

I've actually participated in larval debridement. Super neat and successful technique!

They actually can and do eat "healthy" tissue though if given the chance.

Ewwww 😅 you actually did it?
Sorry, not to derail this thread again but do you feel anything at all?
No no no. I performed the application and removal. Not on myself. I was told that at times they could *maybe* be felt moving, but overall it was unnoticed.

You could use a pump to drain the water.
