Magpies????

Quote:
Magpies are supposed to have specific color markings. They are actually supposed to be mostly white with a black (or blue) "cap" on their heads and black (or blue) on the top of the back and tail. Magpies can come in chocolate or silver as well but black and blue are the most common colors. Here is a picture from Holderread's waterfowl site.

The Ancona ducks come in a variety of colors - black/white, blue/white, chocolate/white, silver/white, tricolored, and lavender/white. Their markings are more random and no two Anconas have the same pattern.

Both breeds are very closely related and are believed to have originated from the same stock but Anconas are heavier than Magpies.

My two Magpies, Ciscoe (after Ciscoe Morris, the Gardening Guy, for you Seattle area folks)

And Peeps (who peeped all the way home when we got her - the name stuck!)

Her bill has just recently started to get the speckled coloring

I have two Ciscoe, the drake, and Peeps, the duck. She's my best layer, the loudest of the bunch, the best nest maker.....would love to breed them someday.

I prefer the magpies to the Khaki's. I have four of those. Magpies are less high strung. And my duck has laid just as reliably as the Khakis.

yes I'd say inky is a Magpie!....Occasionally an almost completely white one is hatched.---even from the best marked parents...not that uncommon...Magpies are one of the toughest breeds to get the proper markings on...Show quality is very specific,,,but every magpie is special...and Magpies will 'white out quite a bit while they age...I have a perfectly marked 6 year old hen that now has white feathers spotted throughout her wings and some of her cap now.
I have a nice flock of 18! yep 18!
Working on these prettys for about 5 years...love the breed and will stick with it....I posted pics tonight on another magpie thread...will try to add here too.I love seeing everyone's magpies....cuz i feel pretty alone here in Canada---so I come here to see what you all have...lol

I have read that Anconas have a random pattern of the dark color and Magpies are more homogeneous in their patterns.
