Mahonri...Dental ?? for you

Have you looked into the new laser dental drilling? That is what my dentist uses. It is a laser with cool water oppose to drilling. No Novocaine and very little discomfort. I'd give you his name, but I doubt you'd want to drive an hour for a dentist!

But, I am sure there is one in your area!

Right now I have to drive into Loma Linda for one, with the no novacaine they have to do full sedation, I do not have any sort of meds tolerance. First time they did it, I was so out of it, 5 hours later I told my work assistant my face was melting off (hubby stopped by my office to deliver some things, and the intern asked how I was, think it was like his 3rd day....

Hi there. So sorry that you've had troubles.... and that you've fired your dentist, believe it or not, I fire patients from time to time... in fact, I fired one today.

Anway... back to you.

1. I refuse to work on a child unless a parent is present.
2. I RARELY do fills without anesthetic, but there are occasions when I do, and only when I feel that the child won't feel pain.
3. I see LOTS of kids, and I am a general 'family' dentist, but from time to time, if a child won't settle down with Nitrous Oxide and an injection, I refer them to a pedodontist.
4. Once I do a filling, I can't control what the child eats, how the child takes care of his teeth etc..., etc...
If a filling comes out within 1 year, I do it again at no charge. If it's been more than one year, then I pro-rate it because usually the insurance won't pay to redo it within two years time.
If it's been over two years then I charge full price again, it takes just as long the second time as it did the first. Most of the time when I have to 'redo' a filling, it's because the kid has what I call a potty mouth. Very poor hygiene, diet (lots of candy/sugar/soft drinks/pop) and inadequate home care.
5. Good luck finding another dentist. I wish you well.

Hope that helps.

We just fired our dentist also. He is a friend, My DS's Godfather, and I worked for him years ago. My DS hasn't had a cavity in years. He went 6 months ago and had 7! I just about died! I got 3 fixed and was waiting on an extra $600 to finish the rest. He went in this week for a cleaning. He has 3 more but one of the original ones is gone.

WTH? So we're at 6 now. So DH decides he's gonna call his dentist and take DS to him. They go yesterday. New dentist finds only 3. Even with old treatment plan in DH's hands, new dentist cant find the cavities old dentist was talking about. He went ahead and filled DS's teeth so we are good to go now. I just don't understand.

Unfortunately, I see more and more of this every day. Some guys just can't make it unless they 'find' stuff to do. Scary.

When I make up a treatment plan, if they have a question about it, I do intra-oral photos of the cavities so that the patient/parent can see them with their own two eyes.

Have you considered a bi-annual trip to the oklahoma area? LOL...Sounds like you are one of the good guys...they are just so hard to find.... And sometimes the ones that insurance companies send you to are HORRIBLE...a couple I went to barely spoke english and had horrible garlic breath and B.O.

..I scrub and brush for hours before I go...scrape tongue...whatever....I had a great guy in Riverside CA. but my insurance wouldn't pay for him because he wasn't a provider....I scraped together the money to go see him once a year...he was the one who finally diagnosed my trigeminal neuralgia...he was wonderful...*sigh* The guy I have here seems to be really good too...He's just so young....I feel like I'm having a 12th grader work on my teeth....I'm old enough now that happens everywhere I go... the ER.... The store...Alas...I'm over the hill.

I'm sure that there are more honest and earnest dentists than shady ones, but they're only human so stuff happens. The fact that this is a friend makes it more hurtful I'm sure. When I was a kid my parents took me to a dentist who my father grew up with. I would do almost ANYTHING to avoid going to the dentist. Granted, my teeth are just not 'good' even though I grew up with very good diet and dental hygiene. It's very frustrating that I had little sugar and junk food, almost NO soda, and brushing was REQUIRED in our home, but I still had a mouthful of cavities, and a friend who had terrible dental hygiene barely had a single one.

Anyway, this dentist would administer Novocain, but apparently was sloppy about it, and didn't wait for it to take effect, so I'd often be in pain or at the very least still uncomfortable. If I complained, he’d ‘slap’ me on the back or top of my head, not a real hurtful slap, one of those thunky sort of thwaps and tell me “Nonsense! That doesn’t hurt!” and ignore me, continuing and usually kept an elbow placed so I couldn’t really move much, especially since I knew he had sharp pointy things in my mouth. Pretty horrible really, and if I said anything to my parents, they just thought I was overreacting, since this WAS a friend of theirs! It’s one of the few times my parents didn’t take me seriously, and I know it was because of the friendship thing… I just shut up and dealt with it all till I got old enough to refuse to go anymore.

I don't think this guy made up cavities, but he was arrogant, sloppy, and lazy.

Thank you Mahonri I really apprecaite you taking the time to give me an oppinion so it would seem that I was a bit picky about SOME things but not all.I sure don't regret leaving.I didn't tell them off or anything I just called when the next cleaning was due and told them we were no longer patients there. They said oh okay and then hung up.Didn't ask why or anything.

I've asked around for a good dentist but 1/2 have had that one and been so/so on him/them and the many others have NO dental insurance so no visits. I haven't got any 2 that recommend the same dentist.

Can you tell me of any "tools" I might could use to help me find a good one? Is there a place peole rave or neg on dentists?

PM me... tell me where you are, I'll try to help you find a good one.
