Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

Actually, yours said 112. I changed it to 113.

Hmmm.... On the first page, it said, "GreenGoddess.... has set 120 eggs!bow (Mahonri will hatch 81 chicks, Icelandic, EE, EE)"

Hold on... Checking.... Yep... Still says the same thing... This is on the first post of this thread...

In the two years I've been on BYC, I don't remember ever seeing a post about this... But, I know I can't be the only one it happens to....

It's funny, if you watch them, they pick up pieces of bedding and drop them on their backs. Maybe an instinct for camouflage?

There's gotta be a joke in there somewhere.

Nope.. Not a joke... I have at least one every hatch that does this... The inner membrane turns to "glue"... Basically it gets all gummy and the chick gets stuck... But the outter membrane (the white skin that tends to dry out and cause shrink wrapping) is the way it should be...

I have the same problem. It usually happens with the last 2 or so to hatch. I have been having to peel the outer dry membrane off and rest of the top part of the egg and then moisten the inner one it and let the chick push its way out of the rest of the shell. I know I shoud let nature take its course, but just can't seem to let the chick die if i can help give it a chance.

I thought of that but it looks more like pellets than bedding... Thought maybe that was her "midnight snack"... I mean, who's gonna steal it, right?!?

We need to get to the bottom of this so we can try to stop it from happening in the first place...

I help chicks hatch also.. If a chick is just too weak, I leave it alone and let nature take it's course... If a chick gets stuck due to humidity issues or whatever, i will help because I know if the chick hadn't gotten stuck, more than likely it would live... I don't think we should help every chick that seems to not be able to hatch on it's own but I do believe that since we are doing this so unnaturally, there has to be a balance.... There is a fine line on when to and not to help... I'm for one still learning...

I was out of town for a week, then too busy to catch up on this thread. I did set my eggs on time, though. I know I'm probably supposed to list that somewhere, but I don't know where. Can someone place these on the master list, or tell me how to?

I set 27 eggs total: 2 Dorking, 4 Sussex, 6 Black Java, and 15 BC Marans.

Thanks!

Thanks for thinking about me. I slept well; can't say that I'm feeling great but the coughing isn't too bad.

It's amazing that a chicken can see a 4 inch gap to get out................................... but open that gate all the way and they back and forth along the fence.................... turning around just before they get to that wide open gate hole.
