You are welcome! Just doing my best to help pass the word, so this can be the biggest hatch-a-long ever!

Oh I meant to mention this earlier, I am almost positive that one of the five week old boys was attempting to crow this morning. DH just looked at me and said, what was that noise? I asked him if it had come from the chicks, he said yes and I said that is one of them trying to crow. I have a feeling their days in the house are numbered now!

Mahonri also mentioned a similar problem and I am worried about mine as well. I gave almost a dozen hatching eggs to another BYC'er who lives somewhat close and she wasn't able to get any to even start growing. I know he is capable, since I had three of my girls eggs hatch for the NYD hatch but I am wondering if his fertility is low. Will cold weather effect fertility rate?

I think it does...kinda. My chickens won't use the pop door to go out, and I only leave the people door open when the sun is shining (cold or not) and they seem to enjoy going out from there. I think unless they're outside, he (Mr. Roo) leaves the girls alone. Right now I'm only getting about 1 in 7 fertile eggs.

And I thought it might be that I wasn't collecting the eggs quick enough and they were getting cold, however I have managed to put in a few still warm eggs and STILL no go.

It might be time for a new roo as well. The lines are getting rather close. I kept a meat hen too add some new blood, but I can't get any of her eggs to hatch, argh. ARGH!

I like my roo, never have to worry about him being agressive. I could give him some new ladies perhaps...

Hmm, when you say cold, how cold is it? It's been cold here too but only down to the teens and only for short periods. My cockerel is 7 1/2 months old and 100% fertility; we sold his dad last month because "his" fertility was low, only about 40% and besides, not half as nice as his son has turned out. We just hatched 13/14 eggs this past weekend, and the 14th died at halfway through hatch, not sure why.

Course, this morning I thought DH might want cockerel for dinner - crowing at 3:30 am and not stopping till dawn was a big annoyance.

I don't think there is such a thing as a "quiet" crow, is there?

ETA: Thanks daisychick
