Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

Just a quick update.. I got a new flashlight in the mail today (240 lumens!!!) and it's awesome!!! It don't quite make my EE eggs glow like I wanted it to but I can most definitely tell if the eggs are viable or not!! No more keeping dead or clear eggs in the incubator!

I've only lost 7 more eggs..

8 Lavender Orpingtons (All doing awesome!!)
24 EE's ( 5 had quit)
32 my own mix (All doing awesome!!)
28 from a friend's mix (Lost 2)

So, I am now down to 92 eggs

I also have 8 lav orp eggs that are on day 6.. I could see veining in a few of them but will leave them alone until I put the rest into lockdown..

As for the flashlight, I got it off Ebay and it was only $12 and some change... I am extremely happy with it and would suggest it to anyone candling!!! Here is the link.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180562495782&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

It got up to 75 degrees here today, so I mucked out two coops. These two REALLY needed it. All nice and new pine shavings with a little DE mixed into the bedding. It gave me some time - I rest, frequently - to take some pictures and watch Angel with her chicks. I dunno if she is the mommy of any of 'em (she's a bantam EE), but all six chicks have feathered shanks. Hmmmmm, bantam Cochin or bantam Brahma? Hmmmm. 3 prospects of the former and one of the latter: Frick, Frack, Nugget, or Charlie. Their FEET are not feathered, so I suspect Charlie.

Cuties!

One of the five was in the lower, pen section with Angel, learning how to scratch in the actual soil. She kept fluffing up in front of the chick every time I tried to get a picture of it. Good Mommy!

Look at them perching! Just BEFORE I managed to get this shot, all five were lined up on the roost.

So cute! Lovely chickies.

I candled again today - soooo much more definitive than day 7. Much less stressful. Eggs were either nearly dark with an air cell, some veins visible near the air cell, and even some movement(!!!!!!) or lit right up with some visible blood rings, small dark splotches, or nothing at all.

Out of 21 shipped eggs, 15 are developing! For a first-timer, I feel lucky to still have a whopping 71% on day 14! I hope that they are all able to hatch, and I told them that they were all good, strong, healthy little chickens. (Well, I said that to all the eggs as I measured them, even the quitters, before I knew...)

Here's the breakdown -
5/8 Welsummer, 4/7 Speckled Sussex, and (YES!) 6/6 EEs are developing.

I am so excited and nervous about lockdown and hatch....
