Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

I culled one fail, but it was the pullet goldneck egg that I expected to fail but was testing for fertility. It was fertile

I have a few more I'll set after Easter, plus a TON of millie eggs to set as well. My black d'Uccle is finally laying fertile eggs, so I'll set some of those post-Easter as well.

But for now, I'm anxiously awaiting the eruption of 20 d'Uccles on Saturday

Mahonri, I decided to increase my humidity on this hatch because of chicks getting stuck and my air cells have been pretty large on all of my hatches even though I have been keeping my humidity between 40 and 45% for the first 18 days. If you have large air cells, I don't think it would hurt to increase humidity to 70%. They are not going to drown if they have plenty of room to breathe. Like Chookschick said, they are not going to absorb humidity, it will just keep them from drying out more.

I agree- I don't exaggerate when I say I get the humidity as high as I can for confinement- fogged windows aren't unusual. I don't use a hygrometer anymore. I think in that machine I would use a wad of wet paper towel, loosely arranged for greater surface area. Anytime there's a lower humidity than what the fan will dry, you risk sticking far more than in a still air incubator.

In the Brinsea, you can open it and examine whether there seems to be a sticking issue without risking the other eggs, because the unit recovers so quickly. It's worth a look to know whether those kids are stuck. But that being said, the ones not yet pipped will not suffer sticking until they pip if you have a sticking issue. I'd check and up the humidity if the pips are sticking.

I don't understand this.

It is too high humidity that causes sticky chicks. Anytime my humidity is over 65% I get sticky chicks.

Ms.FuzzyButts :

Well, I helped out the stuck speckled sussex. It doesn't appear to have any issues, other than the membrane had cememented it in place where it had unzipped. The perils of taking a nap while hatching.... I stuck her back in to dry off and relax.

In other news: one of Mahonri's BWA eggs is unzipping, as well as another of my SS. I had the bator open a bit too much while helping out the stuck SS, so I tossed in a bunch of soaking wet hot washcloths to up the humidity and bring the temp back up to normal. Here's hoping for more chicks!

Not sticky, per se- stuck! You know, the ones that pip and then get glued in and you have to excise them? Laree had some of those on NYD. It's different than the slimers...

Edited to add: May have waited to read before answering- looks like Laree is having them do it again!
