Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

Mahonri, or someone else who's seen it, I need to see a pic of your Wheaten Marans cockerel you hatched from me.

To the person who has 16 coops...

That's 16 sets of feeders and waterers?

16 coops to clean out...

How on EARTH do you have time for that? Right now I've got a coop with 32 adult chickens in it, inside that is a broodymom box (with 3 chicks and momma) and in my basement is a brooder with 6 NYD chicks in it. That's THREE sets of feeders/waterers and poop cleaning and I can barely keep up with it!

You are a superwoman (or man, oh jeez).

And I'm a bit jealous.

Oh and I only wanted to start with about 6 chickens... last April. It hasn't even been a year.

And I've got 12 more eggs in the incubator right now

I have 8 coops of various sizes. Yes, they all need cleaning, but I use the deep litter method. Only the "infirmary" and grow-out coop have their own feeders and waterers, because those birds can't get out. Everybody else uses three group waterers and feeders in the yard.

Mine free range, also. There are additional water sources from which the ducks and chickens drink: two goldfish ponds, the ducks' kiddie pool, and a 40 gallon trough in the front yard.

So, multiple coops isn't always as much extra work as it sounds like.

And I'd also assume that your climate helps reduce some work.

I can't have outside waterers right now (they'd freeze quickly) plus my hose is out of commission for the 6 months of winter that we get, so I have to drag the waterers inside and foul up my kitchen (which is another mess to clean). Then there's the other chores like snowblowing/shoveling the chicken run, shoveling the coop roof, etc.

Honestly between the chores (chicken and non) and my job there's not much time for anything else.

...Except incubating eggs of course (and checking BYC covertly from work - although I *am* on "lunch")

DH is wanting a reptile bator to hatch in. I just got him another styro bator back in September (would have 3 but I need to order a wafer for the oldest one). Soooooooo I will be hatching in the two or three styros.

And he counted my chickens and told me I have enough.

Of course, that was not considering almost 5 dozen in bators now

DH is keeping track of my numbers too... He keeps telling everyone I have 16 chickens, like it's a bad thing?

Obviously I need enough he can't keep track of the numbers. I have currently have too few to sneak extras in!

wow. I have 50! According to DH, anyway. I swear I only counted 24.

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Mahonri, I am honestly shocked you have so few chickens, I imagined you'd have many, many more!

I was told 3 or 4 hens was enough, NOT more than 6 and NO ROOSTERS!!!!!

I was given chicks that turned into 6 pullets and 4 cockerels, all of which are still in my coop.

Then I bought two 'bators...
I have joined the dark side.

HEY! Chicks do not count! If it is not old enough to go outside with rest of flock it is NOT countable!!!!!!
