OOOO thats just great Sumatra503..... Now I need some.
I do have 1 pair of the coturnix. My daughter begged when I was picking up some layers. I've had them about 4-5 months I think. The hen laid 1 egg Monday, but it was a soft glob. I added some oyster shell to their food. I was not expecting any eggs. I assumed they were an older pair and were "just for pretty". You already know any egg will get slipped right in the incubator.
They are unbelievably cute! They make the tiniest little chirps, sort of like it gets lost the breeze. They are tiny little puffballs and they are unbelievably tiney! i had to mash the crumble into a powder for them to eat it. They also snuggle up to my hand when I reach into the bator. I love them!
Any chance we could have a pic to compare Coturnix and Button babies?
I'm soooooo tempted to get Coturnix, I'm looking at quail rails for the Hova-Bator before I get them though. Don't want to over handle those wee eggies.

I hatched a batch of buttons out of my 1588 Hova-Bator, the Quail racks were really nice!! No more hand turning!
I've had great hatch rates hand turning the eggs too...

Mahonri! That is exactly why I got rid of my two remaining silkies. Those girls ruined more eggs than I can count. They played musical nests every time somebody laid an egg. Then when I would separate them with their eggs, they would freak and act as if they were being killed by said eggs. So I brushed their hair, made them look pretty and they took a one way ride to the feed store. I miss seeing them waddle around but not the disruption their broodiness caused.
I keep my silkie because she is SOOOOO broody she steals everyone else's eggs and has them all under her. No one else can go broody cause she won't share
Besides, then I only have to collect eggs from one place, I just have to be tough enough to endure the stink eye I get from her majesty.
