Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

My dog stole one of my duck eggs a week and a half ago and cracked it really good when he dropped it.

Was already 3 weeks into the adventure so I waxed that puppy up and put it back in the bator. I candled a few days ago and its still kicking up a storm in that there egg. I think I shall name it heman or shera if it hatches. It was all thanks to everyone on here at BYC and a select person that gave me hope that it would live this long. BTW lockdown is on Wednesday night

Hard to believe its that time again. I still have a brooder full of babies from my hatch before this one

For a second there you had me confused [They waxed their dog!!!!????]

I have a feeling that if any of my eggs in the two bators are viable [I never candle 'till lockdown] they will easily fit in one bator at lockdown. I already started saving eggs for setting in the "soon to be empty" one; it kinda takes the sting out of having so many that have to be tossed if tossing them means setting a fresh batch.

OK I have 3 pipped eggs and a chick out, but not one of my BCMs is even pipping. I don't want to go back to no eggs hatching mode.

I need someone to tell me how to sand down the eggs and see if that helps.

I do have at least one under my broody. I went to check her a while ago and this time I saw a brown egg. This one is from one of my Davis girls, so I'm happy, but she won't let me touch anything. My precious little Juliet has turned into a crazy broodie. I don't know if there are any more BCM eggs in there, but now I'm wonder who all's eggs she has under there. Obviously they aren't all hers.

I have a question about broodiness. Will she go broodie again soon, or will it be a while, because if it's sooner and that brown eggs hatches, I'm giving her more. Just wish I knew how long she'd been setting.

Its been many years since I've owned a bunch of broodies, but remember it varied from bird to bird. Also, a very few were good at grabbing a quick bit to eat and drink and get back to duty; one like that does not suffer as much from brooding again soon. Most of our best broodies lost a great deal of weight [usually not apparent to the eye because of the feathers] over the three weeks plus and IMO should not be allowed to set again too soon.

Cheryl I don't have any that you mentioned in my flock, but I'll check later and see what I have cooking right now and if I have anything interesting I'll let you know.

I'm so sorry things keep happening after the city messed up your house!

BTW the birds I got from you are doing great, but they aren't laying yet. Maybe in a few more day I hope.

I do have a lot of BCMs in there. But I'm also having hatch problems again with them. I need to learn how to sand down the shells I think. We'll see after todays hatch. I only have one chick so far and one pip, but no BCMs doing anything this time.

Kim why do you need to sand down the eggs? are they getting dirty in the nest box, maybe need to change the contents or put something in front of them at night so no one sleeps there...

No I actually get pretty clean eggs. The BCMs just don't want to hatch. My Prestley/Valentine birds hatch, but very few of the Davis lines and I have 4 times the hens. I don't get it.

Do you do a feed mix? You can PM me for what I use, other breeders have suggested it for breeding flocks

What causes shrink-wrapped chicks? I had my first chicks hatch (for this year) on the 8th-7 Silkies (shipped) and 3 Orps (mine). Two Silkies and all 3 Orps hatched. The other 5 Silkies died in the shell, without even pipping internally. They were shrink-wrapped badly. Today I woke up to a dead RP that had pipped and died. I have 6 mixed duck eggs and another RP that never did anything except die. I was able to save one RP that had pipped. I hatched him completely and he is still very weak, but getting stronger. I am afraid to hope too much, though. My humidity was about 25% for 18 days, then I raised it to 70% for hatching and did not open the incubator except to save this poult-the rest were already dead. Today is day 28. What do I need to change?
