Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Ok 2 chicks out...had to help the shrinkwrapped one some more. Its head couldn't zip more because a strip of membrane didn't get torn and dried across its head pinning it down. I removed it but the bottom was glued to the shell. Sticky Chick Syndrome is terrible. The one that is full of goo is being glued in. I got half the shell off and some membrane and suddenly it started bleeding again. It put it back in and its chirping loudly which is a good sign. If it survives I will have to soak it to get the rest of the shell off its like super glue. I really wanted that hovabator and now change my mind.

My "replacements," are now hatching. I filled up the HovaBator a few days after I set the Easter Hatch eggs. Just what I need, ya know..... more chicks.

Ahhhh, yes. It's always excitement around the Bonham homestead. Always something going on.

Tyler (27 yr old son that lives in our guest house) has always been a big baby. Always. So, when he moans and groans and complains about aches and pains, I rarely pay much attention. This morning he said he was up half the night with nausea and pain in the back (kidney area). 'Hmmm,' I thought.... Later, he ran some errands for me. Then, at about 4:30, he screamed through the intercom to me. "HELP ME! ! !" I went to check on him and he was very very pale, holding his side, and moaning in obviously tremendous pain. Taylor (his girlfriend) took him to the ER. He just got home. Kidney stone. Yowser! That's gonna hurt. They told him it was quite large and still pretty high up. It will be another day or so before he can pass it. THAT is gonna hurt.

Mike went to the store the other day, and I told him to pick up some Zest (bar soap). Then why, when I got in the shower, was there Dial soap in my shower?
I always buy Zest. For nearly 40 years we have used Zest. Why did he buy Dial? I asked him, when I talked to him on the phone last night. He thinks he's real funny. I don't. He bought Zest also. It was "hiding," in a soap container in the towel closet. Funny? I don't think so.

Why do I have 6 broodies on nests tonight? Huh? Can you tell me? Why??? I have already let 4 broodies hatch, and they have completed their tour of duty raising their chicks. One Icelandic is brooding chicks now, and 2 more are on eggs. Don't I have enough to deal with, besides trying to find a dozen broody apartments here? Besides that, I just hatched a bunch of chicks!?

I want a vacation. Thing is, I don't want to leave here. I just want everyone else to leave! I want a housekeeper, too. I'm gonna get one, too.

Someday....

My hatch attempt is officially over. Out of 12 eggs I got zero babies. Eggtopsies showed they all quit apparently very soon after I candled on day 10. I didn't candle on lockdown, because the house was cool and dry that day, and it would have been hazardous to move them somewhere more warm and humid to do the candling.

I "multi'd" a bunch of quotes... let's see if I remember what I had to say...

I had the worst hatch rate ever. I did not hatch any!! I think it is the incubator I used for the first two weeks of the hatch. They almost all developed but did not hatch!! Any ideas? 12 made it to lockdown but no internal pips were even noted. hmmmmmmm. Advice?
I am there with you, vying for worst hatch ever... 12 went to lockdown, zero came out. Can't offer advice, only sympathy.

good day! The chicks were a big hit yesterday with my sil. She almost took some home with her! Wouldn't be surprised if they claim a few soon, after they set up an in town chicken pen. It is almost legal there.
Let's keep hoping someday it'll be completely legal, everywhere!

I have done a Dry hatch twice now and both have had a much better hatch rate then previous hatches using the other method, It really depends on your incubator, I have a little giant foam incubator, I left both holes unplugged with a weather station reading the outside and inside temperatures in my room not the incubator, as long as the humidity in the room is between 20-30% I don't need to do much because I have learned with this incubator that the room temp and humidity affect it a lot. I always have my kids cool mist humidifier in the room just incase the humidity is not to my liking. Even for a Dry hatch the humidity has to be between 20-30% for the first 18 days then 60% for the rest. This hatch I added a little water to the bottom of the bator on day 18 for lockdown because i do not have a humidity reader with a probe so I honestly had no idea the actual humidity in the incubator at hatch. I really need to get me one and maybe i would have a better hatch rate, I had a 75% hatch rate this time :/. Last time i added one teaspoon of water to the bator at the very beginning and left it at that for the rest of the hatch, I still got a 75% hatch rate, I am still working on getting better percentage. I have had a horrible hatch and it wasn't my first time either, I lost all but 2 chicks and thats when i decided to try dry. each incubator have different methods that work better for them, and each person has a different incubator that works for them its a matter of trial and error and learning from it.
I am sorry for those who had bad hatches and experiences with this particular hatch and happy for those that had great hatches. All of us can learn from this and get advice and ideas from others about there hatches to hopefully get a better hatch next time.
X2 and thanks for the sympathy and encouragement!

I have pips! Don't give up hope folks. In my problem bator I have 2 pips and a bunch of rocking eggs. I've given up all hope for the quail eggs but the rest are local eggs and a couple of the shipped eggs. But the shipped eggs look like they're doing nothing. I'm soooooo excited for more babies!!! yay!

I gotta definitely put the serama with a buddy, she won't shut up. For such a tiny little baby she sure makes a big noise. I just love her so much. I don't know why but I do.

I think they have vocal cords all the way down to their toes...

I guess I'm through with my "pity party" because I am actually warming up to the idea of participating. I can feel the slightest little twinge of excitement at the thought....I must be a masochist.

Good! I am jumping right back in, myself. I put 12 fresh eggs from my own gals in tonight, after I cleaned out the quitters & wiped down the bator.

Ummmm, yes, I have new hatched chicks for sale.
Sooooo, neighbor. Whatcha got, and how much?

(Yeah, sorta serious... I have fuzzybutt jealousy.)

Ya think I would have known better to get the two bags o' feed into the coop before the gravel was delivered in a huge pile in my driveway. In front of the coop. On the opposite side of the pile from the feed.

That was a little inconvenient...

Oh, how heartwrenching! I hope the little gal makes it okay!

We hatched 18 out of 44. The last hatched late this morning and I'm guessing we are done now. All seem very healthy and are doing great. We did have some issues with shrink wrap. It is extremely dry here in north east colorado. We have trouble keeping humidity up for hatching. I don't know how to post pics but will try to figure out.

27 out of 71 : / but only 1 from my own eggs i set didn't make it (8)

lots of shrink wrapping and only 4 out of 28 silkies made it into lock down, lots of infertile and VERY early quitters
