I want to thank every single one of you that has helped with this hatch a long. It was so fun to share, and to hear the fun stories. Glad that those that needed some help was able to get the help needed..and of course, those that needed prayers..ahem..Mahonri, got prayers, and those that just needed to vent! What a great place. BYC, thanks for being here. We love you for all you do. Mahonri, thanks for doing this. I know you had a lot of help, like I said, thanks to all that helped! I have met some new folks, and learned some things about some new folks. Fun!

Recording was done with my Nikon D7000, really great camera.

I had one out of 3 maran eggs hatch, came out almost 24 hour after the other chicks hatched. I started with 4 eggs, shipped, so was not too disappointed.

Asparagus won't be ready until just after Mother's Day here. DH has been getting some crazy ideas since he bought a tractor, and we have 250 asparagus plants arriving in May!

If you are overrun with asparagus...

Meanwhile, I have a sick hen for the first time, and I have no idea what to do. DH says she hid in the community nest box much of the day and he thought she was broody. Last night, she was in a different nest box and barely responsive. Unable to open her eyes much, and let me touch her (my birds are not handled much). There was watery poo not too far away, but not sure if it was from her. Her crop felt okay.
I was sure she would be dead this morning, but DH said she was walking around on the roosts, but one eye will not really open. I have no idea what is wrong, and once again, am rushing off to work. I'll go check on her before I leave.

I had Black Betty do this recently and a leghorn yesterday. No idea what's causing it but at least they pass quickly.

So the egg I opened yesterday died and is bloated.

But I still have one weakly chirping. the one I opened was very very veiny still but the membrane was very dry. I'm afraid to try to open up this last weak chriper. Part of me wants to give it a chance but part of me says...its day 26! If it can't come out on his own, its probably not meant to be. What should I do?

I'm a dirty rotten meddler, I'd deshell it.

Well I opened them up. One was alive but no pip...nicked it in the process and its bleeding. Don't think it would have made it regardless. The rest were dead and fully formed, a few internal pips, all had no yoke. One drowned. One is still alive and since I opened it its chirping its head off. BUT its very veiny still. Can I give it some vitamin water? It definitely wouldn't have made it if I didn't open it. But now that I did I want to help.

I don't give vitamin water but I do put 1 tbsp of white sugar in a quart of water to give them extra energy.

Ok i have a question...the inner membrane of this egg still looks pretty veiny but where it pipped is a huge gash but no blood. Does the inner membrane still look veiny even after all the blood vessels have retracted? I'm afraid to cut into to it and hurt him but he's acting like he's ready to come out. Getting louder and louder.

Yeah and it'll bleed a bit. What I normally do it de-shell leaving the membrane on, then open the membrane around the head so it can breathe and move around. Put it back in the incubator, can wrap in a damp paper towel as necessary. They do bleed a bit.

Because even if he isn't he is supposed to prepare like he is, so there goes my weekend. So we're going to see a movie tonight. If the little bugger isn't progressing much I may fiddle with him after we're back.

Because even if he isn't he is supposed to prepare like he is, so there goes my weekend. So we're going to see a movie tonight. If the little bugger isn't progressing much I may fiddle with him after we're back.

Thanks for sharing! I love mommas on nests and their little wiggle as they settle down on their eggs or chicks.

I just finished watching it.... It is so heartbreaking when she brings back that last worm and no one is there and she just drops it, looks around, and flies off...

It seems like he just got back. My younger brother just finished his training as a pilot for the Marines, so we are going to have to get used to this sort of routine very soon.

Oh no kvmommy!!! That is terrible! I hope it doesn't happen and your movie plans can just be put off til next weekend. That really stinks!
