Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

the large size, not the small ones. when someone first told me suet cages i didnt see how eggs would fit but didnt question it, lol. i didnt realize they made other sizes. i found some of these on clearance at walmart a few weeks ago in the garden section, came home so excited and DH couldnt understand why.

Well, here's a color comparison. The two in the middle are my mystery eggs.

And here are all 10 in the bator. That turner takes all of almost 5 mins to make. As a bonus, the lid to the carton was tearing. I just cut off the top, the tabs, and the bottom of each cup. I've got 2 small unopened bottles of hand sanitizer under the carton until tomorrow when I can go find a piece of PVC pipe to attach to it. I made a set of these last summer for my first hatch, but I don't know what happened to them.

I have a craving for hot and sour soup. Think I might make it tomorrow, but we'll see. I need my grand daughter Khamaria here for it. She likes to help because it's her favorite soup. I told Kayla we can make won tons, the suffed kind and and some type of noodles. Now she says she wants lumpia. If she could roll tight enough, that would be one thing. OK to have sloppy wontons to a point, but anything rolls can end u being a mess. Maybe I'll just toss something in the crockpot. LOL

Good news on the pups Mahonri. BTW I hope you got that tooth taken care of. I know I teased you, but I really was concerned. I've been there and even have a molar I broke off months ago that's killing me. I really do hope you're feeling ok.

Razadia you should listen to your dad! BTW you can make hatching cages from just about anything. I have no idea where mine are right now, but I made them out of hardware cloth. You can use $1 store items to ut together to make them too. Get creative and put some more eggs in there! LOL

Hey! No fair! I posted my recipe. I need more soup recipes. Sweet and sour soup recipe please? You can email that and the Lumpia recipe as an attachment if that is easier (if you have them saved somewhere). If not you can wait. I know it's tough to type right now with a broken arm.

I have to admit it was really good! Made plenty to share with Dad and to freeze some for later. I did miss the garlic bread I usually serve with it though.

Now I gotta add Walmart to my list of errands tomorrow. If they don't have the large suet cages I guess I'll get the plastic cross stitch sheets. I've heard they work well. You just cut them and attach sides to bottom and you have a breathable hatching box. Can't remember who here on BYC posted that one.

No suggestions for a dependable electronic thermostat for my bator? I'll probably get the Brinsea one then. They have a hardwired version that will be a perfect fit, just hoped to hear from others that had used this or any other type that worked well.

Have no idea on the thermostat Sunny. Sorry. Did you check the bator pages? Or maybe just put a post out there. I would.

Suet baskets are the things I couldn't remember. I tried and tried and the name wouldn't come to me.

I don't have a recipe. I'm a dumper. I used to have friends stand over me while I cooked and write things down. I rarely measure anything.

Make up a couch for me when my arm is better and I'll go cook it all for you. LOL Everything is actually very easy.

Now that the last kid is grown and out of the house we actually have a spare room with a bed and all! You don't need to sleep on my tiny couch. lol I'm serious though. I'm really getting into soups now that we live in cold country and I want you to show me how to make your sweet and sour soup. Now if anyone out there has a fantastic broccoli soup recipe (Outback restaurant's version is to die for, so something like that), I would be a reeeeally happy camper!!!

I don't measure stuff either but I'm getting better at estimating when I go over it in my mind. My oldest is 32 and has been out of the house for a long time now and calls almost weekly for recipes. She gets aggravated with me when I can't deliver right away so to avoid her ire I've gotten better at it. The youngest has no idea how good he has it. He moved out a couple of years ago and also calls often for recipes. Now I don't have to wait til the next time I make it so I can write it down as I go. I just run it off to him so he can buy what he needs and go for it.

Does anybody else have grown kids that do this? I mean they almost never give me any warning, often calling me from the grocery store just assuming I have nothing more important to do then spend 20 mins on the phone giving detailed instructions which they will promptly forget by the time they get home so they will call to have me repeat it all over again. I'm torn between being flattered and feeling needed to being irritated that they don't seem to think I have a life outside of them. Apparently I must really like feeling needed and being flattered because I still drop everything when they call!

Baked goods are still an issue though. I never leave a recipe alone and you bakers out there understand how hard it is to describe something like consistency to a novice! I like a really moist cake or fruit bread so I always add more wet ingredients and then add just enough dry ingredients to get that perfectly moist result. IDK how to explain it though. I think you've got to experiment for years and have a few flops before you figure out what works really well and to be able to tell before baking if a batter is right on or not (that and a basic understanding of chemistry).

Jeez this thread is cool! Is there anything you folks don't talk about? I mean besides the obvious stuff that is verboten anyway. I'm learning so much here! I may need the puppy advice soon! I think my shepherd may be pregnant. The vet should be able to tell in about a week.

OK, I must be tired. I really ramble when I am tired or nervous. Well I've got an appt with my Dentist tomorrow so I better get some sleep now. Goodnight all!

OK I can top ya. LOL

My oldest daughter manages a Safeway. I get calls from the store to help the customers! First time I thought she was kidding. Been about a month since one of those calls, so I think I'm due. Oh and she'll even call if someone is looking for something herbal. Also substitutions. She's a great cook, but I get calls for things she says she thinks about that I made when they were growing up and wants to make it.

Daughter #2 likes to try to impress me with her cooking and especially baking skills, and yep, I'm impressed! Daughter #3 hates to cook or even grocery shop, lol But her daughter Khamaria loves to come and cook and bake with me and surprises her mom. Daughter #4 gets paid by #3 to go fry chicken for her, I'm smarter, I just have it in the fridge or freezer when she's here and she asks if she can fry it. LOL My oldest son can cook too. He ate non stop from age 9 to 14 and I taught him at 9 to cook. I couldn't keep up! He bulked at first till I told him girls liked men who could cook. He's pretty good. Dakotah? He says he's living on pizza and cereal. I lost one. LOL
