Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

And if the teenagers don't mind their manners they could be on the menu too. My birds aren't picky

I carry a cell phone when feeding the chickens in case of an "I've fallen and I can't get up" moment. My chickens aren't picky either. And that scares me. Down to my very core. Maybe I should install a panic button in the coop? It's a wonder they haven't had a CSI (or one of those shows) where the victim (or portions of the victim) was found in a chicken coop. Ew.

We keep a small bucket on the corner of the kitchen counter for scraps. I'm always telling DH to put some leftover in the bucket. He always asks if chickens will eat it. I tell him, chickens will eat anything and "don't fall down in the run". I constantly threaten I'll save funeral expenses by dragging him out to the chickens............

I have a feeling if I passed out in my grow out pen, my little Icelandics would eat me alive. They pick at all the moles on my legs as it is... thinking they'll get a tasty morsel of my leg.

I've seen how my flock will pick every morsel off a ham bone or turkey carcass.........I know there wouldn't be much left if I dropped outside some where..........well, maybe a pile of white hair!

On the topic of fresh meat ... in a book called something like Mrs. Basley's Poultry Book of Questions and Answers (or something or other) she mentions ... now remember this book is from ... I don't know ... around 1900 or maybe before ... she says that rabbits, squirrels, and groundhogs or some other small type rodentia-style animals are a good source of fresh meat for the chickens.

I'm not criticizing anyone who may want to feed their chickens that way; I just find it amusing because it's so far removed from anything I've ever read in contemporary chicken books. Things were so different in the old days. We've got "squirrel crossing, slow down" signs up in a nearby neighborhood. Quite the contrast.

For those reading along, BuckeyeDave gets "sawdust" from his butcher to give to his chickens. I guess it's stuff that is leftover after butchering. It's in the Buckeye breed thread. About a couple of weeks ago.

I'm having trouble keeping up with this thread, too. But it sure helps to have some of the messages coming through into my email.

I've read things like that before. Also read about feeding ground meat, fresh or dried.

Sawdust (or bonedust as my butcher calls it) is what they get off the bandsaw blade after cutting up meat and bone, my butcher mixes it into his pet mince. I've been thinking about offering some pet mince to my breeders. It isn't like the chemical added stuff from the store but good old fashion ground trim, organs and bonedust (sawdust) from the saw. He mixes it up fresh at the shop and says humans could eat it though they probably wouldn't want to with the organ meat in there. The chickens will steal it right out of the dogs bowl if given the chance (very tolerant dog) so I know I'd have no problem getting them to eat it.

Has allergy season started where you live?

I absolutely HATE Phoenix from February 5th until the first day the temp hits 105.

C'mon JUNE!

"Allergy season" implies that the trees are starting to bud and that grass is growing.

Not a chance here. It's 11 degrees out right now. Snow tomorrow. Subzero on Sunday.

That'll clear your sinuses.
