Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Well the residents of incubator #1 are trying to vacate. 3 out of 38 shipped eggs, dang! And one chick looks a bit funky, of course it's the lakenvelder. But just this morning I got an email and phone call from a breeder local to me. He can have two dozen eggs for me soon!

Local eggs!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, the 24 quail eggs are starting to go like popcorn. Nothing and then two out and seven more nearly zipped in less than 30 minutes. They sat pipped for two days before the action started.

Kathy, how's it going?

Bucka... I use long acting horse spray every time I clean the coop and nesting boxes - spray it in the crevices around the roost, on the floor/wall crevices and in the nesting boxes - I think it's called EX Shield.

I'd like to think that it helps.

WOW, lots of excitement today!!

It's sunny and warm, but very windy.......heading outside to collect eggs for Mahonri and Deb and then get some chicken coop cleaning done!

And you'd think those quail had an appointment to go to together. Already ten out and more zipped. It was like a mass exodus! Went from nothing to giving me a little more faith in shipped eggs.

How the heck do you count a squirming, writhing pile of quail chicks through an incubator window??? Add to that the two chicks that are walking and lying on them, which happen to be nearly the same color.

There are at least 14, with more zipped.

Well, looks like no Sussex chickies for me this time around.

On the bright side though, I have one Araucana chick (with cute teeny little ear tufts), 4 Ameraucana chicks and 5 Faverolles chicks. Looks like the eight remaining eggs are not going to hatch but 10 is definitely better than none considering most of them were shipped eggs. ON TO THE NEXT HATCH!

Now the BCM have started to pip...............yikes, this going to be one crowded incubator. I need to start shifting out the driest.

But on a very bright note, I'll have an empty incubator to fill up. I got a phone call this morning from a lady looking for chicks. My feedstore doesn't sell live chicks, so they referred her to me. She'll take all my barnyard mix eggs from the Easter hatch! YAY!
